Congratulations on a beautiful pipe!
I suggest cracking open that EMP tin, scraping some off the top and letting it air dry some, then load the new pipe and smoke it nice and slow. To my palate, EMP is slightly bittersweet from the Turkish, with the smokiness of the Latakia. A very different experience than the 1Q and a bit more Vitamin N.

Mississippi River doesn't rock my boat due to the Perique ( weird mouth chemistry ) , and I haven't forayed into the Ashton blends, so I can't speak for those.
Make sure to keep the mortise and airways ( stem and bowl ) free of juices that way you'll have a sweet smoke just about every time. I usually curl up a paper towel and sop up the mortise once the pipe is cool, and pipe cleaner the stem and bowl airway. Keep alcohol away from the bowl and use sparringly on the bowl airway and mortise, perhaps once a month. Paper towel the bowl once cool so it doesn't get bogged. I use a bottle brush and a 12 ga shotgun brush to even out the cake and knock out remnants. It sort of becomes second nature after a while.
My first real pipe was a little Peterson Aran 03 Apple, it's going to be retired from the rotation very soon. Smoked it 5 times a day for about 6 months straight, used a torch lighter, burned the rim, ran it hot, over reamed the chamber, the stem got loose, anything you're not supposed to do to a pipe, I did it. Now it generates a lot of moisture after every smoke, no matter what I put in it. Still smokes like a champ, but I don't want it to give up the ghost.
Rant over. Hope it helps !

Nice pipe!
Be careful with the Smooth Sailing. Dry it out before smoking. It's one of those that can scald your tongue before you know it...

Congratulations Johnny - a great looking pipe. My first pipe and still best smoker was a little Peterson System. I love the P Lip and I often look at the Peterson silver spigots, but TBH I find myself going down the road of the smaller Danish pipes. Well done on your choice; I'm sure it'll be a friend in the years to come.

Yeah, it's awesome! I've smoked a couple bowls so far, love it!
I'm having trouble keeping it lit sometimes. I've heard this is normal and to not get discouraged, so I'm not. I pack the pipe with the 3 step method (tamp the tobacco lightly, then a little more and finally pack it down). It might be because the tobacco is a little wet. Today I put some EMP on my smoking tray and let it dry out for about 15 minutes before I packed it. It seemed to stay lit a little more, with less re-lights than my previous bowl of Smooth Sailing I smoked last night.
No issues with tongue bite, woo hoo!
At this point my only question is, how often can you smoke your pipe? I've read that some people smoke it whenever they want, some people smoke their new pipe every 24 hours or so, and some seem to put it in rotation and only pick up the pipe once in a while. I only have 2 pipes, my corn cob and my Pete. Would it hurt my pipe to smoke it once a day? Twice a day? (morning and night). I clean it after every smoke until the pipe cleaners come out fresh and clean. I just enjoy smoking so much I don't want to wait every other day to pack up my pipe unless it's recommended.
Also, I've read a couple horror stories throughout all of my searching . For instance, some people are having "burn outs" or whatever it's called when you actually burn a hole into the pipe. It seems the reason for this is smoking too fast or something? It makes me nervous! I'm trying to baby my pipe, but since I've never smoked a pipe I don't know how hard you need to hit the pipe, or how fast/slow you should smoke, etc. I just pray that nothing happens. I would be incredibly heart broken. Any tips or suggestions anyone can give to avoid any problems?

Glad you're enjoying the pipe - good to hear.

Not really a problem as long as you don't over puff and make it overly hot. However, ideally a new pipe shouldn't be over smoked in the beginning.
I will say that a pipe will taste fresher if allowed to rest at least one day. I prefer 3-5 days when I can. Test it out, see if you don't notice a difference. Some will tell you that they notice no difference, and so for them it doesn't make sense to rest a pipe more than a day. as always, to each his own.

It is very difficult to explain to those who are not interested in this hobby how attached one can get to one's pipes. The other day a colleague who had once stated he'd love to try smoking a pipe looked at my briars. The only thing he seemed interested in was the labels I have written at their places to keep track of the blends I have dedicated them to. To be honest, I got the impression that he thought it was all a bit wierd. The whole idea of having to be disciplined about something, of actually taking up a hobby, seemed far too much like hard work for him; I believe because he assumes that smoking a pipe is like smoking a very large cigarette. He also mentioned he had never had a decent shave in his life, but was entirely uninterested in learning about how to get a better one, even ridiculing me gently for taking the time to learn how to avoid an unpleasant experience every single morning of my life! We are in a time in which people expect instant results for no imput or effort, instant food, instant smoking, instant fame or success and have become so used to utter mediocrity that the prospect of immensely enjoying a smoking experience never even occurs to them. The pride and pleasure you will experience with that Peterson is something no cigarette smoker will ever even have an inkling about.

Well done, John.

Well said, friend! I've only been a pipe smoker for about 4 years now, and although I'm sure my collection is far from being as impressive as some of my fellow men here, they are my pride and joy. It's nearly impossible to try to explain to other young people why I would want to smoke something that takes 30+ minutes to smoke. Time is of no concern to a thinking man. We are a rare breed in today's times. I can't wait to grow old with my pipes, and the first one is always the most treasured. Congrats friend!

As a quick addendum, I have just finished my first full bowl with my own new (and only)Peterson, a Donegal 106, filled with my own "world famous" mixture of 50% GLP Union Sqre and 50% H.H. old Dark Fired, matured for 7 months. While a tiny bit hot due to having no cake at all in it, it was gurgle-free, smooth and I smoked right down to nothing but ash as easily as anything. In full Briar Brotherhood disclosure I must say that tonight I did notice two extremely small pits in the briar at the very bottom of the bowl, uncovered after two half-smokes and a good rub to clean the interior. These are as only as big as the smallest pieces of stray tobacco one can find at the bottom of a long-open ribbon cut blend and I am sure will be filled quickly by the cake but I feel we mut be extra-open with even the smallest q.c. concern with Petersons these days. I would be surprisd if they weren't following this site and they must know that their most loyal and knowledgable customers are monitoring the situation, fully aware that there are plenty of alternatives on which to spend their money out there.
