I did the same thing with my old boy. Being left handed, I was striking it backwards with my left thumb. I didn't figure it out until I purged it a couple of times and changed the flint for nothing then used my right hand because my left was tired.

"what are Pete lighters like? They are fairly pricy but are they worth the investment?"
Chances are it's made in China so make your own conclusions
I will wager it will conk out days after the warranty expires if not well before. That's why I buy re-fillable angled pipe lighters at about £7 for five from Amazon. Each one lasts anywhere twixt 3 to 6 months afore they die so in the long run a reasonable investment.
Regards,
Jay.

Well, you learn something every day here! I just tried to flick my Kiribi flint wheel backwards and not a trace of a spark. I did not know that.
I suppose for anyone who feels it's awkward to flick the wheel clockwise you could reverse the wheel. May need more than pliers!

Jay, on the warranty it says it's life time ... I don't buy it however. I had an issue with a Colibri of London once, also life time warranty, I sent it back for repairs so many times that I got tired of it myself. I wrote it off as a loss ... that's why I am a match guy under most circumstances :puffy:

Didache, I have just gotten mine, pretty saticified, nevertheless this flame height adjustement is something unstable, other than that I find it pretty nice and feels hefty in hand, but frankly,I'd say,£ 50 would be my limit for these lighter, hope theres no further quality issues rising cause I cant sent my lighter nowhere due to international shipping restrictions, so only help are our domestical watch/clock repair shops if any.

John, the sparking wheels on all lighters are 'handed' meaning they will only work in one direction. Rather like most wood saws only actually cut on the downward thrust.
The only time you should need to flick the wheel in the 'wrong' direction would be to free it up if it jammed due to a fully worn out flint.

Jay.

I did figure that out all by myself!! It just never occurred to me to try to strike in a direction which seems odd to me. Long experience with Zippos where no one would spin the wheel counter to the intended direction. Right handedness with Kiribi, Xicar, Old Boy, they all feel natural to me.
