peckinpahhombre - I agree with you totally about the thin walls you typically find on volcanos. There are some really cool pipes out there I would love to pick up but I avoid them because of those thin walls. When I commissioned this pipe with Marco one of my main requests was to thicken the walls up. That made for a more substantial pipe that is a bit heavy, but it does feel good in the hands.
I ended up building a little marble wood stand for the pipe:
It's the first time I've worked with marble wood. Very interesting material to work...it cuts very easy but it also chips fairly easy, even when sanding. I've tried a few different stains on some small sample pieces but I may just end up varnishing it or buffing it with carnauba wax.
