Hey guys,

I just received two Doc Cobs from MM. I just noticed that one has a slight gap where the spoon shank meets the bowl. I contacted MM and they were going to send me return shipping label. That's a pain if I can just fill it up with Elmers Wood Filler.

Is this a good idea or would you send it back. It a $28 pipe.
Thanks

Thanks for all the responses. I decided to send it back for a replacement. MM is paying for shipping both ways. This wasn't a cheapo MM, so it should have been done correctly. I understand that s### happens sometimes. My other Doc Cob is perfect! 👌
This was the right move. For one of their basic line pipes I'd be OK with it but yeah, these pricier cobs need to have better fit and finish for the money you pay.

This wasn't a cheapo MM,
By their newer pricing they're still in their lower price category. Only 5-6 years ago their freehands were below $30, while ten years ago their limited edition reverse calabash pipes were $50. Even just a few years back the General was less than $10. Honestly I'd have heated the shank to loosen the glue and pressed it into the bowl a bit more and re-glued it. You could always receive worse than what you had.

Microwave will loosen the glued in shank if anyone ever needs to do it. Take the shank cap off first though.
All of this is very interesting to me. About a month ago, I bought an MM Cobbit through The Country Squire. After my second bowl, I manage to pull the shank out of the bowl while trying to pull the stem from the shank to clean both. I contacted TSC, and they replied that MM recommends regluing with Elmer's. So I did that today. I'll report back when I see how well it holds after my next smoke.

This is why they shouldn't charge so much for their pipes.

Easy to look over something like that of the pipe cost 6 bucks... Not so easy once they're 40 or 50.
On those expensive models you are paying for the acrylic stem. Some are nice looking but I don’t like acrylic stems, so I stick with the sub $20 models and add a $2.50 Danish bit. It would be nice if they offered the option of a Danish bit instead of acrylic, at a reduced price.

I agree. I actually really like their junky plastic stems.
