After writing the above, I got to thinking... scary, eh?... ha ha, I think that it is that even though the pipe is ultra lightweight, it is still very off balanced. All of the weight, even though it is not much, is on the very end, which makes it precarious to clench for long periods of time.
Nice with a little thinking 😁
I'm not a clencher and I always use softbites on my pipes, which makes it possible for me to clench for a while. The stem on the Eltang Basic is very small, but with a little modifikation I got a softbite to fit. Now I feel I can clench for hours - because of the low weight.

My favorite minimalist pipe these days is the MM hardwood. Since they cost only seven to ten bucks, you may not expect much, but they are good smokers. The stems seem more durable than the soft plastic ones on the basic cobs. They have enough chamber for either loose tobacco or, for longer smokes, flake/coin/plug/rope. And they look to me like Danish modern furniture, especially the straight versions. And they don't have the folksy look of cobs, which I love but that bothers some people.

They also make good giveaway pipes for sharing a pipe with a guest.

This is one pipe I refuse to get rid of. It stays in the garage currently. But they really don't smoke bad. And for what 11 extra dollars you could throw a forever stem in it and then it's a real pipe!

Thank you for your comment.
I have nothing against cobs, but I don't own one - yet.
I'll check the MM hardwood out next time I visit The Danish Pipe Shop.
