I just picked up this new GBD at Smokers Haven in West Seneca NY. just loved the shape and how it felt in my hand. Only issue is that stem smells just awful and is oxidized a fair bit. It's never been smoked but it is an estate that's been sitting around for some time. I can't wait to smoke it bit I need to figure out how to clean up the stem first. HELP!

Thanks for the link Greg, I think I'll try that this weekend.
Roth, thanks it was a toss up between this and a really nice Peterson St PatrickmDay 2012, to be honest my 10 year old daughter picked it out!

That is a great looking GBD and it won't take much to get that stem shiny black. I recommend some micromesh to finish it. That older pre-Cadogan GBD will be a better smoker I suspect than that new Pete. (at least by my experience)

Congratulations on your new pipe. I hope you enjoy it for many years to come. Your daughter picked out a nice pipe for you. Take her along for future purchases. It is always nice to get other opinions.

It's funny, we're in Buffalo for her cheerleading competition and some daddy daughter shopping and all she wants to do is go back to the shop and look at more pipes! I've created a monster! I do feel a little weird bringing her to a store with a smoking lounge in it though.

That is a great looking pipe, congrats on your new acquisition. I bring my 10 year old daughter to my local b/m all the time. She likes looking at the pipes and the owner always gives here a bubble gum cigar. Throughout the years all my kids would go with me to any tobacconist I would go to and they always loved the smells and looking at the stuff.
I would not give it a second thought about bringing her to a place with a smoking lounge, it is not like she is sitting there for an hour or two. I think it is great daddy/daughter time that should be cherished.

Thanks Harris that's good to know, we've had a great weekend bonding together. Its a memory I'll cherish forever. She even asked to have the pipe whenever I stop using it so she could remember that day!

Anyone have any idea o how to age this pipe? It's a natural 398, has the oval GBD stamped on the stummel and the brass inset on the stem, there is also a small capital G on the back of the stummel. I was led to believe there is some age to this but now I'm not so sure.
Edit: it has the round made in London, with the England in a straight line under it

Thanks again, that's pretty cool as far as I'm concerned, this is my 5th pipe and the others have been relatively mid to lower grade. Its pretty exciting to unexpectedly pickup a pipe thats around a quarter century old. My 10 year old daughter picked it out so she'll be pretty excited to hear how old it is.
