You just use the tip. The jet function only kicks in when tipped, otherwise it's just another liquid fuel lighter.
Some think they're like a butane torch but the "jet" flame is little more than what you would get from a zippo with a long wick. The Beattie works on a changing pressure system and when tilted, blows the flame downward.
Nice score - I haven’t had much luck buying vintage lighters. I recently bought 2 GBD rollaflame type lighters (Trophy brand made in Japan) from 2 different sellers. Both look great a work but they leak fuel from the adjustment screw. Because the fuel tanks are metal and everything is sweated together I don’t think they can be repaired.

That's it. You have to tilt it to get the flame to heat the tube and then whoosh!?

I wouldn't have acquired mine until 1970/1, so I guess it was simply in stock at Wilke's.
Something about the photos you posted looked familiar to me, so I checked the kitchen drawer. Sure enough, it's the same lighter. The gentleman I purchased my daughter's Jeep from last year is a bit of a lighter collector and he threw it in with the Jeep when he learned I smoked a pipe. The duel flame thing is pretty cool I gotta say.
