Just finished it. An excellent book, very well done sir!

And don’t think for one second that us pipesmokers wouldn’t know you named that second dog just for us ?

Nice job, man! Looking forward to (hopefully) your next one!

Thanks, man! I'm so pleased that you enjoyed it. And yes, of course, Sixten is a shout-out to our community. I even mention the origin of his name here, which I'm sure was read with a polite nod or an eye-roll by almost everyone. Thanks again for reading, and for the kind words.

At times, as I was a land surveyor and often went a ways out during the days. However, similar to Sven’s first year in Longyearbyen, despite being at the end of the earth I was constantly around other workers, some good friends, many detestable, all housed most of the time in a very large camp.
Sounds very familiar. I've had some jobs like that too. Remote, but crowded.

Got some time last night to make some more progress - it's keeping me engaged and continues to be well written!
Finished the book. Great read. Some are good writers, others good storytellers, while a rare few are both. Odobenus is both. And what’s not to like about a novel with a dog named Sixten?
Many thanks to both of you!

I finished the book last night. You did an amazing job, you are quite the writer. I definitely will read it again in the future and I'm sure I'll enjoy it even more.

"my companions at the table: two large burlap sacks with dried seal faces stretched over them at head height - Frideborg and Ingeborg - and, in the seat of honor, a third sack with Bengt's kindly whiskered visage uopn it. Small black rocks stood for his eyes, and his tusks were bound to the cloth in crude approximation of their original placement."

Then in the next chapter MacIntyre comes for a visit and meets Frideborg, Ingeborg and Bengt and MacIntyre is the perfect houseguest. One of my favorite parts of the book.

The pipe smoking is a bonus. A very enjoyable read.

This truly makes my day. And I'm particularly pleased that you enjoyed Sven's dinner-table companions. They were fun to write (and my editor actually wanted more: "where are Frideborg and Ingeborg now?" and so forth). Thanks very much for your kind words.
Crap, I just realized that I never followed up. Yes, I thoroughly enjoyed the book, also. I felt like the ending could have been a little more tidy, but…. Leave them wanting more, right? Loved it, and thank you for writing it!!
And thank you, Cosmic! Much obliged.
A second novel? Perhaps Skuld's memoirs or Helga's?
The former is what my wife wants to see.

The “Train station”?
The "Zone of Death" is an area in Yellowstone with a constitutional loophole where (arguably) a major crime could be committed and the accused could not be tried or sentenced due to a lack of human inhabitants.

The argument was raised at least once and denied. The case was disposed with a plea agreement conditioned on not appealing the constitutional issue.

In other words, it's an academic argument that would likely fail at the trial court and possibly fail on appeal given the policy arguments. Oddly, efforts to close the loophole through legislation have been thwarted.

Can't believe this thread has been dormant.

Do yourself or someone else a favor this Christmas and pick up a copy of this book - excellent read, perfect by the fireside with the snow and wind howling (or by the beach for those lucky b________ds that don't do winter, lol)!
The description lost me at period piece, romance, and attention to pipe smoking.
