again..new...1960's vintage? I would try and see what you sell it for on Ebay. Lot's of rich pipe snobs ready to dish out serious cash on a pipe like that, TRUST ME!

Very nice looking pipe! Kind of a freehand take on the skater shape, which is one of my favorites but rarely seen. I own two and they both have thin walls thus burn rather warm. Looks like you will definitely have that problem. Maybe I need to start looking for estate stanwells...
Well done!

Nice. I'm craving a Nording freehand myself. Not huge into the freehands, but definitely want a nice one in my rotation. That one is a gem, may it bless you with the best of smokes.

I believe I will probably smoke some frog morton out of this when I decide to light it up. The break in process for a pipe this old takes a while so I am told. Because it has been sitting for around 50 years and never been smoked I have to break it in properly and slowly to make sure I dont ruin it. But, anyone have any good suggestions for a tobacco for this pipe?

It pisses me off that I can talk "wine talk" for hours on end because that's where my head was thirty plus years ago. But, when it comes to pipe tobacco - an on again, off gain lover affair for 20 years - I go blood simple.
Before our twins were born we kept a very modest 100 bottle wine cellar. When the gomers showed up the quality vinos quickly disappeared and we started drinking plonk - made with a screw top lid.
So, here's the moment of truth, Smeigs. If this pipe isn't going to underwrite your 401k or your kiddos' 529 plan, what the hell are you waiting for?
Life is short, kiddo, and we're a long time time dead. Some of the best Cabs, Malbecs and Merlots I've ever rented were knocked back with hamburgers, pizza and Chinois Moo-Shu pork.
Call the ball. friend.

good call fnord and I agree with you! When I bought it, I didnt plan on holding onto it forever and then selling it many years down the road. I plan on smoking it for years and years and hopefully just pass it down and keep it in the family.

That is truly a wonderful old Stanwell, congrats on a great find and light up that baby and enjoy it for years. It doesn't require any special breaking in method. Personally I like to break in the bottom of the bowl for the first 5 or 6 smokes then fill it to the top. My only regret is that you didn't buy ALL of the unsmoked Stanwells. That was a treasure chest.

This is a great thread! I love Stanwells so I would probably light it up if it were mine but the other part of me says hoooold on! Danish made Stanwells are now a part of pipe history and like herbinedave says if that thing was carved by Sixten you might have a real treasure on your hands. If nothing else I'd hold off a bit putting the flame to it until you can research its history a bit.
Anyway what a sweet pipe, what good luck to come upon it.

well, I believe there might be a couple more of these beauties for sale by the guy I bought mine from. They are all different shapes of freehands but all unsmoked and perfect. I can double check tomorrow and see if Chuck (the guy selling them) would be interested in selling a couple to some of you if anyone would want one. I know he is holding on to a few for the West Coast Pipe Show in November.

Can you tell me if any of them were "giant" - meaning a bowl diameter about 1" and depth of about 1-2" ??? I would love to get one as the pipe you have is a true beauty!

yes, all of these free hands were VERY large pipes. The one that he has left for sale is a little bigger than mine with a different shape. I will take a pic of it this week and post it for you and see what you think.
