I have a love/hate relationship with Ebay, mainly because of my love/hate relationship with my own impulsive tendencies. :wink: In anticipation of opening an Etsy store soon for restored pipes, I wanted to pick up some project pipes for restoration. Problem is... I got a little trigger-happy with my bidding, and won a few more pipes than I thought I would. And I still have quite a few other active bids out there... I'm a monster! Can you help a PAD-infected guy out to save him from the wrath of his wife? :rofl:

Never got on ebay, but that doesn't mean I escaped. It is beguilingly possible to accumulate too many pipes through any means of purchase. Ebay adds the adrenaline rush of bidding competition with the nicotine (and aesthetic) allure of pipe acquisition. Irresistible. What helps me -- when anything helps -- is the enjoyment of the pipes already on the rack and the sense that too many will diminish my enjoyment of the fine stable I already have. It's getting so most of the pipes I select for a smoke are nicely broken in, and I try to remember that before I buy another. The pipe show and the state fair (where my go-to carver has an exhibit) are my downfall.

Yup - I did the ebay thing for a while. Smoked a Barling blasted bulldog I bought on ebay just last night. Pray the urge never ends. Because once I got over ebay, I started commissioning pipes.

A good way to pick up good project pipes is to go international where there are usually less eyes and the prices tend to be lower, usabay can be overinflated at times.
If you're planning on selling the pieces, you can never go wrong with Dunhill and they sell more effortlessly than other marques.
I'd be a wide-eyed hawk and swoop in on some great deals to found abroad, of course there is the hassle of longer postal wait and some sellers don't do worldwide shipping, but all in all there's some real diamonds in the rough over there.
For example, ebay.fr usually has a good selection,

here's several examples:
An oldie that looks like the LC shape and is highly sought after and induces most collectors to lose their mind and quickly open their wallets, this example sold for very cheap gauged against current market trends:

Sadly I'm also a cheapskate and often underbid only to lose and suffer heartbreak and sometimes question my decision-making because there were recently 2 pipes which caught my fancy and the Gamboni jet rhodesian was ending first so I had to make a decision and decided I'd rather have the C. Ringling because his work really grabs my gonads but wouldn't you know it that the damn Gamboni went for a bargain at around $175 and I ended up losing the Ringling auction anyway...

If you are bidding on high multiples of pipes, you have to make one bid for the maximum you think it's worth to you and don't be tempted to get Into a bidding war. It's easy to win every bid...just overpay! Usually, this type of addiction passes with the ever dwindling reserves of cash. Good luck.
