Thanks. Nice looking and 30% off. Still, the grain just puts me off.

I love the grain of Morta personally. But besides the grain, the *history* of the stuff just boggles my mind. What did that tree witness 7,000 years ago ??? I mean, they were building Stonehenge when this tree was green. I have counted the rings on a larger block of Morta with tight growth and counted nearly 200. That was just one section, nothing like the whole diameter. It's likely the tree was hundreds of years old when it fell. Fascinates me.

I have 6 mortas and all are great smokers. A couple of them are from Croatia and are a little larger with thicker bowls but they smoke really well.

If you don't like the blasts above, then you won't like morta. Even heavily blasted it takes on that checkerboard look, always leaving the grain intact. I've never seen one rusticated, as most love that grain. I'm guessing you are SOL, sorry to dash your dreams. I don't think I would spend that kind of money on a block of morta to rusticate it, and I'm guessing that is why I haven't seen anyone else do it either. I could be wrong though.

Walt Cannoy did his famous suede blast on a morta or two. I hesitate to mention it because I really want one and the man just doesn't make enough pipes.
You can see the link: Here
Bottom two. You can make out the grain, but barely. Seems like the best option for haters of grain.

I realize we all have or own set of dial twiddlers, but this one, OP, seems an easy speed bump to jump, no? My longest period of eyeball to pipe contact happens when I’m picking out a pipe before smoking, Thereafter I just see the rim when lighting. My hand does all the ogling then on, and there are few materials out there that offer more to hand ogle than a blasted morta pipe. If the grain really bugs you throw a leather coozy on it and pretend it’s a vintage vintage piece.
The material is different enough to warrant the effort, imo.
