Bigvan explained that the "ball" is steel, and it is part of a pipe display system which uses the ball and a magnetic base to allow display of the pipe every which way. Apparently, this type of magnetic pipe display system was popular some years ago, but I'd never seen it before.
Still popular. I bought a magnetic display stand from Grant Batson about a month ago and Vauen also makes one which I have. I love them, I assume all Rad does is put the stand underneath the fabric so that the pipe stands up during the photography. See below.

It's funny Roth, it kind of reminds me of the discussion I have had several times with my wife. Occasionally when she sees a new pipe I have purchased, she asks what it cost. No matter the pipe, I always say "around $100". And she says "$100!!! for a little piece of wood and some rubber, that's outrageous!".

IMHO, no one makes the Zulu shape as well as Rad. I commissioned one from him a couple of years ago and love it. Yours is a real beaut, Harris. You have great taste.

LOL Rothnh...wish that worked on my wife. She loves going to the thrift shops to find herself some old vintage clothing. I tell her the same thing when I am looking at pipes. I just say hey their vintage...just like your clothes

All my pipes are 30 to 40$ as I tell the wife when I get them, one day she said instead of all those cheap pipes why don"t you buy some good pipes, I had to run out on the old porch to crack up. LOL. The old cajun

Thanks for the nice comments guys.
When I was married, the wife never asked what my pipes or cigars cost. All she cared about was that I never said no when she wanted to spend money, it worked for me.
Wayne, I have been wanting one of Rad's Zulu's for a while, as I also think he makes the best looking ones out there.

Harris - that is gorgeous. Love the shape and the blast - big congrats to ya!

Thanks for the explanation - I've been wondering why that ball was in there - now I know!

six, thanks.
igloo, thanks and I am thinking a glass case would be very cool.
I got the pipe in and am smoking 2007 Stonehaven in it as I type. It is performing like all my Rad's cool and dry and the tobacco tastes great even though the pipe is not yet broken in. I am very pleased with my latest.
