Well, this is the Pipe I purchased a month or so ago from Hiland Cigars.com
It did come unclean, needed some love. I de-oxidized the stem and polished, polished the bowl and sanded the old cake out, and went through with pipe cleaners and brushes with everclear.
1963 Dunhill Root, 660 4s.

Very nice! A recent podcast commented early 60's Dunhill's are some of the best there are. Should be a good one!

Thanks all, I didnt take before pics.
It showed up, and the stem was the worst part, spotted and blotched green.
The shank was fairly clean, the bowl had some cake, but not much
The ease of the cake coming off leads me to believe it has been sitting dry for quite some time....either lightly smoked, or well loved by its previous owner(s)
Im extremely happy. I actually went ahead and grabbed the last dunhill from Hiland Cigars this evening. Figured if this one turned out nice, why not for a mere $80.
Sure as hell beats Ebay

Cakes do dry out over time if not used and if it came out easily and was smoked it was probably an aromatic that makes less dense cake.
Sounds like you got a great buy and did a good job bringing it back. Enjoy!

Beautiful pipe Warren. Outstanding job. I myself will be looking for a birthyear 1958 Dunhill. Hope it looks as well as yours

Had my first smoke in it, with my latest favorite tobacco, Best Brown Flake, cube cut.
It smoked decent, but has that dreaded perfumey musty taste. So I decided to dig out the retort kit I bought last year and give it a go.
Letting it dry overnight before tryng again.
I used the retort on the 2006 Peterson St. Paddys day pipe I have that had the same problem.
We'll see how it worked.

Well, I decided to rub out a Dunhill Flake, aged about a year and a half.
All I can say is wow.....amazing. This pipe smokes cool, slow, and sweet right off the bat.
Im almost halfway through the bowl, sipping away, and no relights.
