I agree with you guys Grabows are truly underrated. Their prices are definitely no indication of their quality. I have a few Starfires and they are great smokers even in comparison to the more expensive pipes.

BTW, I just got the association between the "Casino" pipe in the top picture and the heart carved on the bowl. (duhhhh) I saw another one on Ebay with a club on it. It smokes just fine but I'm not sure it's worth collecting all four suits. I could be tempted.....

I've never owned a Grabow, I wouldn't mind getting an old one in good condition. I highly doubt (but I've never really looked too deep) that the new ones are as good as the real old classics. The new ones I've seen look plasticky. The ones posted in this thread look great!
I've looked at them on ebay but oh boy are there a lot of real, real beat up Grabows out there. Kinda got tired of looking for the ones that didn't look like they spent the night in an active fireplace.

Sometimes it's difficult to look beyond the grime and oxidation on an estate pipe but those are the ones I usually go for. As long as there isn't excessive charring or chips on the rim that can't be judiciously topped with a little sanding, cracks in the bowl or shank, or mouthpiece completely bitten through, I'll have a go at it. So far it's been very rewarding.

A Grabow was my first pipe a few months ago. It treated me well, as I had no idea what I was doing! I've aquired a a Brigham, Peterson, and Stanwell since, so I haven't even glanced at the Grabow. Now that I have a bit more experience, I must revisit!

I've had a couple of older Grabows that were great smokers. I think, like Kaywoodie--only more so, most think of them as cheap "drug store" pipes. They were fine, middle-of-the-road pipes, back in the day. I am often tempted by older Grabows on Ebay.
