Hello all, I'm new here but I've been lurking for a week or so now, and I just purchased my first pipe: a Savinelli Duca Carlo (616 I think). I actually had my first smoke today, a nice bowl of 1-Q. So far I am really enjoying everything about pipe smoking, from the actual act, to the great community. But I do have a question to ask.
I was wondering about the 1-Q; I have smoked cigars occasionally and so I have experienced tongue bite and I know how tobacco is supposed to taste, but while I smoked the 1-Q I really couldn't get much flavor from it. Actually I really could barely tell I had the smoke in my mouth (which is also a testament to my little Sav because it smoked so cool :)). So I was wondering if the reason behind this was because of something I was doing, or if maybe I just need to try a richer tobacco? And if it's the latter, does anyone have any good recommendations?
Thanks all, and I look forward to being around more in the future (with more noob questions most likely >

First off, Welcome to the forums! The only dumb question here is the one you don't ask.
1-Q isn't a full flavor or bodied tasting tobacco, so if you're a cigar smoker, it will taste light. If you're looking for more flavor, well, you're bound to get many different suggestions. I'll throw out 2. The first is any latakia blend, like Peter Stokkebye Proper English or Dunhill My Mixture 965. The other would be a VaPer (Virginia - Perique based blend) like Escudo Navy De Luxe or Peter Stokkebye Bulls Eye Flake.
See if you can get one (or all) of these and see how they grab ya!

P.S.- ace57 means our friendly neighborhood Mod, Lawrence, not me. Just to make sure there wasn't any confusion.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm really thinking of trying a nice English blend, but I heard that 1Q and aromatics are good for beginners so I also have A Savinelli aromatic tin. I was just afraid to try an English straight away lol

Which Savinelli tin do you have? I LOVE Savinelli Aroma. It's like smoking candy. For that matter, everyone around me loves it to. It's got a great room note.

You're right Ace57! Lordnoble did find him... :D
Lordnoble is exactly right, (IMHO) 1-Q is a very light tobacco.

You may find that as you gain experience 1-Q may become one of your "go to" tobacco blends.
As for English blends there is no reason not to give them a try.

I might suggest (as I did yesterday, I believe) that Dunhill Early Morning Pipe is a very good place to try out your English "legs" as it were.
Welcome to the fraternity!

In my humble opinion there are a couple basic steps of pipe smoking.Pipes that smoke good is the first. The second tobacco is a little more complex.1Q is an easy tobacco to smoke. It's a good place to start. It doesn't have all that much taste though.Aromatics tend to be flavored along food lines.Cherry,Honey,Hazelnut and such. Some folks like straight Virginia to me though it can smoke hot.Latakia is a taste that you would probably either like a lot or not at all.Perique has a taste that some love others don't.So as you can see you have options. Each person determines for himself which blends he likes. If you're looking for something of a more cigar like taste I suggest a mild English blend Maybe even one with Perique in it.

It is in fact Aroma! I haven't opened it yet but I picked it for its room note actually!
And thanks for the warm welcome everyone :) I am quite happy to be a part of the community now.
I think Early Morning Pipe will have to be my first!

I like Dunhill's Early Morning Pipe as well. I also just tried (and reviewed) Hearth and Home's Magnum Opus and it's the bomb-diggety! I'm a cigar smoker, too and I think the full flavor of the English blends will be right up your alley. I like aromatics, too. I smoke Captain Black White, which is similar to your 1-Q and I really like Nat Sherman's Riverside Whiskey.

Tongue bite - slow down. You are not smoking a cigar, so heavy puff/draws aren't necessary and give me tongue bite. If your pipe is a clencher, try sipping on the draw. You'll get the hang of it and welcome!

Welcome...I agree with others/ EMP is a nice start into English blends...should try them all...if you can...one of the great joys I find with smoking a pipe is the variety of blends out there...I have smoked 1000s of cigars (still kick'in) and have never found the flavor I find in pipe tobacco...also all the great tech (you can or don't have to do with pipe smoking...really about finding what works best for you...

I just got a Savinelli Duca Carlo 2 weeks ago - I love this pipe. The shape is wonderful and it has a large bowl. I have been breaking it in with Stokkebye Navy Flakes, Orlik Golden Flakes and Erinmore. Works great for me!

now this is probably the dumbest question out there, but it is something that is really concerning me. It feels like I am almost looking for a little tongue bite to ensure that the tobacco is only in my mouth. Most of the time the smoke is so cool that if I take a draw I can't even feel it lol, and I just want to be sure I don't inhale it. I'm sorry for such a dumb question, especially because all common sense is telling me I am just worrying to much, but I'd just like to know if there's anyway to remedy this?

Someone once told me that if you see any real volume of smoke come out of your mouth, youre smoking too hard and too fast. 1Q is classified as an aromatic, if Im not mistaken. Aromatics tend to burn wetter and hotter and have little flavor to them, but theyre upside is that they smell good for other people around you who may not be used to you smoking. If smoked hot and fast, a lot of aromatics will still have very little flavor, or if they do, it is a sort of chemical aftertaste that is unpleasant at best. When smoking a more "pure" tobacco blend, lets say, McClellands AM Pipe, the small sips and low volume of smoke in the mouth bring out the best flavor. This is just a general guideline that has worked for me and how my smoking method has developed, but the best suggestion that any pipe smoker can give another is, "Like what you smoke and smoke what you like." Just keep these tips handy when you venture off into other, full flavored tobacco blends, or even if you decide to stick to aromatics.
