I made a post in the maintenance section a few days ago. I was deep cleaning an estate pipe Dr Grabow Grand Duke, but it was never a very dirty pipe. Just wanted to try my best to avoid ghosting. I mostly had to do work on the stem and I think that part turned out pretty good. I also stripped the lacquer off of the bowl and rubbed it down with mineral oil until I can afford white rouge / carnauba wax and the tools/wheels to apply it.

Cross posting everything below just because I think it would be good to share my first experience with everyone.

I decided to try the Arango Balkan Supreme since it had a lower strength, no flavoring, a fuller taste, and a more pleasant room note.

I think it was pretty darn good! It's hard to say as I have nothing to compare it to. But, it was soft and smooth while still being dark and having a little spice/kick to it. I felt the smoke overall was very pleasant! I'm probably not using any of the right words here, and I do find the taste hard to describe. But, I'm guessing a lot of the taste came from the latakia as it has "generous amounts".

If there was ghosting, I couldn't taste any of it. I also didn't notice anything odd flavor wise with the very thin honey/charcoal coating I gave the bowl.

The bowl did smoke a little hot, but I'm certain that was more my cadence that anything else. At no point did I feel it was actually smoking hot in the mouth. I got more into the swing of things towards the end of the bowl. I didn't have to relight too often until I got toward the end of the bowl where I was lighting more frequently; trying to ensure I burned as much of the tobacco as possible to try and get an even cake on these first few bowls.

Overall, I'd definitely call this little project a success and I look forward to smoking more and trying different blends in the near future!!

Great job, it looks great! Enjoy your journey.
Thank you. It will be a journey for sure! I have quite a few 1oz bags of tobacco to get through before I start really finding what I enjoy the most!!

Congrats! Great choices on all fronts. Balkan Supreme is one of my go to smokes.
I had heard a lot about it and I can understand why. I'm still too inexperienced to really say, but it has that "pipe tobacco" aroma that I kind of anticipate when smoking a pipe. The Balkan Supreme definitely did not disappoint!

Welcome to the obsession. That grabow has gorgeous grain, I really like it.
Thank you! Someone in my maintenance post mentioned the grain on the stummel specifically being nice. I do think I got quite lucky!! I don't know where I saw it, but I saw the most gorgeous briar pipe which is what made me start looking into this hobby. I already smoke so a tobacco pipe wasn't a far stretch. There are certainly nicer pipes than the one I have, but mine is beautiful nonetheless and I'm sure it'll smoke just fine!

So pleased to hear your first bowl was a positive experience.

When I got back to smoking pipes a few years back, I was lucky to have a good friend who kindly gifted me samples of various blends/genres of his favourites.
This allowed me to get a feel without having to buy a lot of tins just to see if I liked them.

Thank you! It was quite enjoyable and I had another bowl after dinner. This time my cadence was much better and the pipe didn't get as hot. Learning! 😅

Beautiful pipe. A good place to start to gaze at your pipe between puffs.
Thanks!! I know it isn't a super expensive pipe, but I do find it beautiful to look at nonetheless!

Good choice in music. My first album, a Christmas gift from some girl. Glad you are enjoying it. But don't try to smoke to bare bottom specially if you have to relight multiple times. That could scorch the bottom of the chamber, and possible cause of a crack. If the tobacco burns down by itself without applying fire to it, it's good. If you have to apply fire to it near bottom to smoke every last bit, bad.

Some nice grain on that pipe, nicely revealed by a good cleaning.

Don't disbelieve your enjoyment of the blend. That's the idea.

Billy Joel is amazing. My dad has been playing piano all his life and I started very young but stopped around high school to play guitar.

I did not know this about scorching the bottom. Thank you so much for the advice!!

Enjoy the journey of discovery! Hopefully you have some nice diversity of blends in those one oz bags.
Thanks! I picked up:
  • Arango Balkan Supreme
  • Cornell & Diehl Old Joe Krantz
  • Cornell & Diehl Autumn Evening
  • Lane 1Q Golden Cavendish Blend
  • Lane BCA Black Cavendish
  • Mac Baren HH Old Dark Fired
  • Cornell & Diehl Haunted Bookshop
I think they will treat me well! I might try Old Joe Krantz next.

you could say that again! You did a great job restoring it man.
Much appreciated! I luckily didn't have to do too awful much to it 😝

Nice looking Dr. Grabow! :)

Enjoy! ❤️
Thank you both! I've enjoyed it so far and don't see that ending anytime soon 😂puffy

That's a Dr. Grabow?! That is a beautiful pipe, full stop. By far the prettiest Grabow I've seen in a good long time.

Anyways, there is nothing about your OP I don't love. The pipe, the tobacco, Billy Joel's Glass Houses album. I'm so glad it worked out for you. Welcome and enjoy your new hobby.

Well now y'all are making me blush! 🤣 I liked it quite a bit when I saw it, but I might've gotten luckier than I realized. And, thank you for the warm welcome!! I'm glad you found my post enjoyable!
