This pipe here is very special to me as I made it myself and it was my first ever pipe. What I love about it is one day I just decided to make a pipe so I picked up a nice round peice of firewood and started carving took me a few hours to fully make it and it was finished a few days later as I did the final touch ups. What I love about my pipe that on the side you can see that it has termite holes slightly dug into the side of it and it makes it look cool and I've never seen anything like it.

A fun project! I started carving them about 2 years ago, and it is a very good hobby. Are you going to add a stem to it, or leave the wooden stem as is?
I think a acrylic stem would make it look nicer and more stylish. In the future I may modify it and add the acrylic stem as I don't really like how fat the wooden stem looks.

Dear Bosnian Piper,
It's neat to have you on the forum. Your avatar's artwork is cool, and I like your creative spirit in making your pipes. I hear that briar heather wood (In Serbo-Croatian: Vrisak) grows naturally in the former Yugoslav republics, and it's great for making pipes.
I have been researching a tobacco from Bosnia called Škija, and thought you might be interested in it (Have you heard of Škija Ravnjak / Drina / Herzegovina Flor? :: Pipe Tobacco Discussion - https://pipesmagazine.com/forums/threads/have-you-heard-of-%C5%A0kija-ravnjak-drina-herzegovina-flor.108686/)
All the best!

Dear rakovski.
Thank you for your compliments about my creativity and artwork. I have a hobby of wood carving so I sometimes carve pipes to. Yes I have heard of bruyere wood growing in former yugoslav countries. in bosnia it is usually growing in hilly rocky areas like travnik and vitez and parts of hercigovina I live near travnik but I haven't personally found any bruyere as I never specifically looked for the tree tho soon I am planning to go out on a hike and see if I can find any. I have never heard personally heard of šiva tobbaco so thank you for letting me know about it I will do some research on it. I am more formiliar with hećimovici tobbaco which is less known you may not find mutch about it but I know some info on the species if you want to know anything about it just inquire. Thank you for replying to my thread my friend.
From Bosnian piper.

Dobar dan, Bosnian Piper!

I like talking with you! I have never gotten close to trying to make a pipe myself, so good job!

Making pipes from different wood types is fun as practice and as decoration and art. When I visited Russia in the 2000's, I got a souvenir pipe with a pretty engraving of a ship. The seller told me that it was only for decoration.

An elderly Russian lady showed me a pipe made in the Java factory in Moscow in the 1980's. It came with an instruction sheet saying that pipes should be made of briar heather wood (vrisak). Having tried different kinds of wood made pipes, I agree with it. The reason is that vrisak/briar, has a good combination of light weight, overheats less, and is not toxic.
It is very useful for you if you can find vrisak on your hikes.

Here is a Wikipedia article on it:

US producers value it highly, but it does not grow here in the USA, so we import it. My Dr. Grabow pipes have "imported briar" stamped on them. I saw a Java pipe made in the USSR on Ebay. It had "Bc" stamped on it, meaning Вереска/ Vereska / Vrisak/Briar.

I am wishing you the best.
Želim ti sve najbolje.

"Herzegovina Flor" is from southern Bosnia, like near Lubine and Travnik.
An article in Russian about it is below. It should translate well into Bosnian or English with Google Translate:
The Russian article explains that there are several varieties of "Herzegovina" Leaf in southern Bosnia, like "High Herzegovina", "low," and "plain", and that "Flor" refers to a method of processing the tobacco leaf.

Herzegovina is the south send of Bosnia, as in this orange color:

Wikipedia article on Herzegovina:

Bosnian Piper, here are some articles that I found out about this special variety:

Škija

Hercegovački duhan – neizvjesna sudbina "žutog zlata"

Hercegovački duhan dobio međunarodnu zaštitu izvornosti

I would be eager to hear your feedback on this.

It has been used for a cigarette brand called Drina. Have you heard of it?

Dobar Dan, prijatelj!
Pipes made from different wood are also smokable. sometimes you may find pipes made from walnut or cherry. here in bosnia they are not as heat resistant or good as bruyere but bruyere is harder to find in bosnia so alternatives had to be found. Also can you post a pic of the pipe that you described that had a ship engraving it sounds like it would look very cool. Also I love talking to you my friend if you have any other interests including balkan tobbaco or similar ask me as I may know. Also your name roskovski is very buetifal name its the first time ive also heard it. And which country are you from? I would assume the name roskovski to come from the former soviet Republic. Laku noć!
