It's probably that weird coating Peterson put on them.

Peterson pipe socks are worn for weeks by sweaty elves who make Peterson pipes. I would just ignore or get used to the stench, unless the socks are really crusty and stand up by themselves while emitting fumes. Looking on the bright side, the socks tend to season the wood, lending it some of that je ne sais quois stuff you sometimes hear about.
