First let me say that I have no experience in woodwork and probably have my thumbs in the middle of my hands.
I started out with a block of briar with a stem.

Then I did some shaping.

And some more shaping.

Then I used some black stain and sanded it off and did the first coat of real stain.

And here is the final product.

I was unlucky with the grain on my briar, no birdseye or nice flame grain here.

I wanted a pipe with really thick walls so it would feel cool to the hand.

I had my first smoke last night and it smokes really well.
Would I do this again? Definitely. It is a great feeling to start from a block of wood and create something. Smoking a pipe you have made yourself (warts and all) is special.

Thanks. I know now to do some things differently next time.
I got the kit online from a local store (I was too lazy to go there and pick it up).

Well looking at the pic i notice a large amount of small black spots. Not having the pipe in my hands e due to the pic i whould assume that the black stain remained in the small craters of a non perfectly sanded briar. You have to sand for hours if necessary to get a polished surface. Before, only before you can stain and if you'll stain two times with a black stain to enchance the grain you have to sand again before the final stain.Remember that sand paper under a grain 1000 leave always invisible scratkes that become visible before stain and wax

ps: not a bad start my friend

I admire your choice of style, as such a thick bowl should yield a cool, comfortable smoke.

Thank you. :)
Pentangle: You are right, I stopped after 800 sandpaper. It felt smooth to me but left those black "dots".
This is so much more compelling than PAD. I already have the next design in my head.

The problems will come when you'll try to drill a block and have all the bores perfectly centered and at the right height.Shank needs a 3mm air bore and centerered/aligned bore for the tenon but at the same time needs to be perfectly plain to have a optimal conjunction between shank and stem, with bo space and or light between them.A kit resolve the problem but is less funny to work on and have a less quality grain. At finally of course shape you whould like could be not possible to obtain
