Sooooo ..... first smoke tonight out of the Aran on my evening walk. 4noggins order sitting at the post office waiting to be picked up and I just couldn't wait.
I had a few ounces of MB Latakia Blend open so what the hell, said I.
Outdoor conditions : clear skies, 22 F ( spring is almost here ). No wind to speak of.
Folded 2 coins and packed them in. Lightly rubbed a third coin and packed the pipe to 3/4 full. Took light from the first match and required no relighting. This pipe has a very open draw, a moderate sip yields a mouthful of smoke. Any more than that and I'd choke up.
The P-lip took some getting used to. First time drawing on one. My smoking technique with fishtails is more of a toke, I don't stick the bit in my mouth. I've learned that the P-lip has to somewhat go in your mouth, and the bottom edge has to rest on your bottom lip. If you think about it, nothing to it.
The flavor : this is the first time after smoking several ounces of MB Latakia Blend to actually notice that there IS indeed Latakia in it. About halfway down the bowl, a very subtle campfire note came about. It went away after a few draws.
The baccy burned nice and even to a grayish white ash. I lightly tamped once toward the end of the bowl.
As my walk wasn't finished, but the bowl was, and the smoke was delicious, I decided to dump the ash and pack another couple coins - after letting it cool down some. I think I had a little too much Vitamin N, plus the after dinner Speyburn decided to kick in, so I only smoked another half a bowl.
This was a pleasant experience. I think the Aran will be a dedicated VA blend pipe.
As for the Butternut Burley that came with the pipe, I tried a couple of pinches in my Meer Friday night and decided it wasn't quite my cup of tea, so it's been traded with a fellow member ....
