Hello all!
I've been suffering from PAD (Pipe Acquisition Disorder) since joining, so I thought I'd share the pain.
Since you seem to like pics, I thought I'd share a couple. I have a very small collection, but its been expanding a LOT this year. My last two new pipe purchases (more pics of the others another time) have been from a brand not well known in the US- Vauen. They're a German company, and their a bit of an industry leader. I really like their pipes in general. The most affordable ones I've seen are from their "Vesuv" line, and since joining this forum, I've bought two. These both use a 9mm charcoal filter, but can be used without them (I think).
The first is the Vauen Vesuv Pickaxe (though I've seen it called an Acorn as well):

So far, I've only smoked the Pickaxe, and it smoke beautifully.

Beautiful, pipes.

I particularly like the shape of the second.

The grain orientation revealed by the bottom is quite unusual.
I still don't understand this trend toward filtered pipes.

Any thoughts on that Bill?

Very nice, I like the thick walls on that first one. How big is the bowl though? I can't imagine its over a 1/2 inch

Yeah, well I do have some:

1) It does sometimes make for a cooler drier smoke, which I prefer.

2) it does cut down (or seems to) on nicotine, which might be good.
I also use some Savinelli pipes that use the Balsa wood "filter" system, and they do cut down on some of the moisture, but I don't think its perfect.

The diameter is a tad over a half inch- and provides a good smoke. The Details on the Pickaxe from Smokingpipes.com:

Length: 4.98 in./126.49 mm.

Weight: 1.70 oz./48.19 g.

Bowl Height: 2.19 in./55.63 mm.

Chamber Depth: 1.53 in./38.86 mm.

Chamber Diameter: 0.78 in./19.81 mm.

Outside Diameter: 1.58 in./40.13 mm.

Stem Material: Acrylic

Filter: 9mm

Shape: acorn/pear

Finish: Partial Rusticated

Material: Briar

Country: Germany

Some of my pipes are unfiltered, I just seem to gravitate to the filtered ones. Might be some residual guilt over doing something I know to be unhealthy in the first place.

I really like the Vauens, and I also have a few Angelo's (inexpensive 9mm filters) that work really well too.

I've also become a huge fan of Design Berlin (9mm filtered) pipes- will post those pics another time too...
@bubbadreier:

I got these two through Smokingpipes.com, and I've also found them at:
www.pipesandcigars.com

www.iwanries.com/vauen-C1856.cfm

www.cupojoes.com/
and a whole wide range of Vauen (though VERY expensive) at

www.cvtobacco.com
Now don't all you guys go and buy my next pipe!

Having spent 9 years in Germany, I know the German's are great lovers of filters in pipes. I have a couple that take filters but the majority do not. They are certainly lovely looking pipes Bill, and if you prefer filters then who am I to argue?
