My guess for the "blob" on the bowl is a big glop of the varnish Missouri Meerschaum uses on their cob stummels. They use a yellow coloring in the varnish. I heard the way it's applied is they throw the stummels in a cement mixer, then start it up and pour in the varnish and let'em tumble awhile. Not exactly an attention to detail manufacturing technigue but it gets the job done. I guess that one got by QC :)

By the way, that varnish is not alcohol soluble. So don't be afraid to wipe down those lava encrusted cob rims with an alcohol soaked rag.

@Beehive 30$ customs on 5 tins is unbelievably low, I'm in Canada as well. Did that include the 9.95 fee they charge for calculating customs?

I was just looking through my history with Smoking Pipes. I have ordered 170 tins from them over the years and never had a single issue. Always packed well, always arrives quickly, and I've even gotten aged tins on occassion, not expecting that. They are my go to place for tobacco and I rarely even need to look elsewhere for a product that I want.

Andy the little form taped to the box said $32 duty, $14 gst and $9.95 for "handling". Guess you pay for them to break it  In the end I still come out ahead of local prices in Ontario.
shaintiques that's quite the record of good service. Even my usual favorite vendors for other things screw up every so often. 2 of the tins in this order were a year old which was an interesting surprise... Maybe that's why the Wilderness was so remarkable?

That's really good for ontario, a guy on a cigar forum got hit with 100$ duties on 10 cigars recently. Last time I got hit with duties it was 300$ on 750 grams, it said on the form tobacco over 200 grams, it seems like it's a crapshoot with customs officials, I don't think all of them are up to speed as the 200 gram mail limit was done away with about 5 years ago I think. The time before that it was 400$ on 750 grams.
