I agree with Jud. A MM corncob is a great pipe for starters (as well as experienced pipe smokers) and they're well within budget. Here are two great order sites.

HEY BIGVAN. i bought what i have under the assumption that all pipes are basically the same.. a vessel to get smoke to your mouth. i had never read anything about them. my whole love affair with pipes started when i stumbled across pix of mac barron dark twist medallions... they were really cool looking and figured they were probably tasty when smoked. so i needed a pipe. i buy and sell regularly on ebay so i looked some up and bought one. while i was waiting on the tobacco and pipe to get here i started researching the hobby... i found that its almost necessary to have several pipes to keep the smoke tasting good so i ordered several more... i like restic looking, hand carved looking stuff so i ordered according to my taste. i cant imagine myself in public with a big sherlock holmes looking pipe(but id love to have on for in home use) so i purchased ones i thought i would look good smoking. i figured briar is briar. but am learning that you get what you pay for. i believe this to be a good pipe that was cleaned withh something thats not fit for human consumption. someone bought it new at one time or another and the probably knew more than me... none the less, i own it now so im going to try to make the best of it... and jud... thanks for the advice. i actually have a Meerschaum bown on the way... this is my ninth day as a pipe smoker and im going to have to learn like everyone else. the difference between today and the day i started ordering random pipes online is that im getting educated and have a support system via you guys/gals, and ill run all future purchases through the group members to keep from wasting my money. im very thankful to have found this site for a couple of reasons: a)it seems like the average IQ here is way above average, and i cant stand dealing with idiots. b)its educational about the hobby and act of smoking a pipe. and c)it just seems like a great group of people to have as "friends". great convo, mature subjects. ect... im glad i decided to be a pipe smoker
and that is why you da man kevin great Great GREAT site... i love the community. i was expecting snobby people but i was very wrong. thanks for the help. i couldnt figure out how to post from my PC so i uploaded the pix to facebook and copied the url to the post box area thanks for the help
And now that i look like an idiot who cant even post pix by myself .... yet has a business that repairs and builds PC's.... i had the honer of having the pix i uploaded fixed by the guy who started the site... NOW THATS A REAL DEAL GOOD MAN anyways thanks for all the helpful info... you guys are GREAT glad i started smoking, and more grateful to kind of fit in here. i feel very welcome...
Clean the crap out of it with alcohol as others have said.
It might take about 10 smokes before you get a decent smoke from it. Try half bowls at first. Then upgrade after a few bowls.
The stem looks oxidized a little bit. That might account for the taste. You can take a look at an easy way to fix that with minimal tools. Here:

Another good thread to cover all yor bases when cleaning up an estate pipe:

Looks like the stem is oxidized to me, that is why it tasted bad. It should be shiny black not greenish brown. There are plenty of articles on here on how to clean that part.
well... i broke the stem of the damn thing trying to take it apart. i need to save some flippin money and get myself a couple of decent pipes... im irritated as hell right now  ugh!!! i dont even think this stem is replaceable. it has an odd shape... any suggestions?
Whoever told you that Dr. Grabows are lame is wrong, I, and many, many others on this forum have Grabows and enjoy smoking them. Nothing wrong with a Grabow, especially many of the older models.
