I've heard of these pipes, but have NEVER seen one. This is a REAL find, and I think it looks like a very minute blast, but I'm sure it looks even better in person.
Briar Blues has one up that's similar to this, although his is actually a light sandblast (I think -- it's really hard to tell).

That is a very interesting piece - where did you find it?
Got it off the bay. Picked up another one from the same seller, but with a slightly different finish in an apple shape. Both were billed as "LPI" pipes, which is how they're marked -- the seller didn't really know much about pipes.

Pitch, two nice pipes. I had them on my watch list also. Glad to see they went to someone who appreciates their place in American pipemaking history. I lived in VT for ten years, and like you have a great fondness for the work of pipemakers from the "Vermont School". Do you have any of Andrew Marks' pipes? You and I should talk Nachwalter some day. Where in the Great White North did you live?

Thanks, Dave. Yes, I have one of Andrew Marks's pipes and am looking to add another. If the right one doesn't come along, he still accepts commissions (and by all accounts is one of the nicest people around). Would love to talk Nachwalter sometime --- I'll send you a PM.

On the one Mike has up on BB, J.T. appears to have used a different blasting technique than used on your LPI, Pitch. While I like the lighter finish, I personally prefer the blast/rustication on yours.
Thanks, roth. I agree -- def. a different technique used on BB's pipe, and probably less time consuming at that.

I found these three on ebay. When purchased they all needed new stems, I contacted Andrew, sent him the pipes, and he made new stems for them. Two of the pipes are from 1976, the other 1983. I entitled my first email to him "A Blast From the Past".

So that's who outbid me on those pipes. Enjoy them in good health, they look pretty cool.
LOL, captain, are you talking about the LPI pipes or the Andrew Marks?
Dave, those are very nice. I really like the third one with that unusual stem -- Marks does that fairly often -- it's sort of a saddle, but it tapers from the shank rather than having sharp "steps" down to the stem.
BTW, here's some pics of my one Marks pipe:

Pitchfork, yes I saw that when I first signed up here. I did a search for Andrew Marks. I particularly like the picture of Andrew as a much younger man working at Froghollow.
