I make my tampers out of Ebony without power tools.

It has a Janka Rating of 3220 owing to the high silicate content of the wood.

It is very hard to burn and IMHO makes the perfect wood for tampers.

It will dull your tools in no time at all.

This one took about 3 days plus polishing.

The Ebony tamper he made me was smoother than the inside of this ladies underwear.

I don't use any wax only the natural wood, and a lot of elbow grease.
