Here is an estate Dunhill I just won this morning. Lousy images from the seller and very little information to go by. Very vague auction description other than it is a pipe :) Bought at a price I'm embarrassed to say but it was a steal. I've seen broken Dunhills sale for more.
Any additional information would be helpful. I'm guessing it might be a tanshell? I am happy with the purchase so far. Now the wait is on for it's arrival.
Dunhill SHELL Briar estate pipe. I cannot make out the stamping if there even is stamping due to the low quality of the images. Also guessing it maybe a Group 4 but who knows.

Thanks pete03! I think it is. I didn't know they had stingers but I don't know a lot of Dunhills as they have been out of my budget.

I don't think that is a stinger. Perhaps it is part of the original inner tube.
The inter tube is open at the other end and not closed off like a stinger is.
I hope this information might help you.

Nice one. Looks like a stinger to me - I too have never seen a Dunnie with a stinger, but I have a few with the inner tube.

Congrats, sounds like you got a steal! It does look like a stinger to me (I've seen twisted ones like this, but maybe they are called something else?). I do believe I read somewhere that some older Dunhills did have stingers.

This suggests to me that before Dunhill's became such an expensive luxury item, people really smoked the

heck out of 'em. Kind of nice to see a Dunhill that someone carried around on errands and left on the

dashboard and took traveling. Even people who have no financial pressure aren't going to use a $700

pipe that way, mostly.

Thanks guys for your comments. I don't think it's a stinger either but a innertube as stated in an article I've just been reading. Dunhill came out with the innertube as early as 1910. I've also been looking at images of varies Dunnies and in one picture you can actually see the innertube just inside the bowl.
Here is the link, interesting.

Seems that every brand had a line of pipes that had stingers in them. At least any that operated in the era of "pipe innovations" that came post WWII.

I'm glad someone here picked that pipe up. Durham, you'll have to let us know how she cleans up. I, like smokeybear, was watching that auction. But the photos were too crappy, without visible nomenclature and the "stinger" in question threw me for a loop. So I didn't put any bids down. Good on you Durham for snagging that one!

Durham, I will go out on a limb and state that I actually think you may have a stinger and not an inner tube. The photo is poor but it looks like the type of stinger I've seen before (I have an old Forecaster with the same type of stinger).
The Dunhill Innertube (I have a 1962 Dunhill with one) is strictly a tube with a single hole (see photo below):
stingers.jpg

So it begs the question: Did Dunhill make pipes with stingers or is this something other than an actual Dunhill? I, for one, am curious and will be interested in what the nomenclature on the pipe reads.
FWIW, I could have sworn I read somewhere that Dunhill did indeed make stingers (as well as Innertubes), but I could be mistaken.

The seller responded to my email in which I had asked what was stamped on this pipe and I did get a reply after two days. Seller stated the pipe is stamped Dunhill with Shell Briar stamped under Dunhill and other numbers he cannot remember since the pipe was packaged before the auction ended. The tracking info verifies the pipe is on it's way!

Here's my Dunhill Tanshell Bulldog, Group 2. The resemblance is strong and I see no reason to suspect your pipe as not being genuine. The only thing is the stinger, and that may have been a later addition by an owner along the way. Every Dunhill I have came with an innertube which I promptly removed, but my experience is limited to the five Dunhills in my collection, and I don't know if the company used stingers at some point. Again, consider the possibility that we may have an aftermarket modification in a genuine Dunhill.

Anyway, hope the photo comes out this time. Working off an iPad is beyond difficult for this little trick.

Thanks ravkesef, that's a beauty you have and you also have four others? Wow!! Thanks for taking the time and sharing the image of your Dunhill. The thought had crossed my mind about the stinger being added later by it's owner too.

If I remember correctly I had an early Dunhill, like 1920's or 30's vintage that had a stinger, if that's what you guys are calling those. It was permanently affixed to the stem , tapered down to a point and had a round ball on the end with a slot cut in it. This Dunhill had a bowling ball stem so it was really old
