Hey friends. About a year ago, to celebrate my book deal, I commissioned a pipe for the very first time. I knew it had to be a MarTelo, as I've been seriously admiring Gustavo Cunha's work from afar for a long time, and I knew it had to incorporate his signature bowl-shape, the Jatobá. [The shape is inspired by the hard seed pods of the jatobá tree, aka courbaril, copal, West Indian locust, stinking toe or Braziliian cherry, though it's not a cherry.]
Anyway, it arrived a couple of days ago and I couldn't be more delighted. It's a bit longer than most of my standard pipes at a full 7 inches, and the drilling/draw/burn are all perfect. I inaugurated it yesterday with some Dorchester. The bowl is tall and narrow and smokes a lot like one of the 'shape-reformed' checkmarks from Pipe Dan.
Check out his work sometime -- he also does some amazing surrealistic freehands and masterful interpretations of classic English shapes. If you're interested, his website is here and his IG is here.
