Sorry for the delayed reply here Dan... just got back from Boston.
Well done! Those look great, and as you say, they'll look better after you get the micromesh going on them. But they are SO much better looking and cleaner than where they were. Right on man.
It's also nice to have a compatriot who's fumbling through the steps of learning pipe restoration out in the world, and documenting, and sharing ideas and insights.
Keep it up good sir.

Thanks Pat. No worries on the delayed response friend, I know you were in Boston visiting that wonderful tobacconist.
I kinda owe the kick start to you boss. I appreciate the detailed process you used and the only thing I did different was the soak time (I had company and just left them, so they soaked over night) and I haven't buffed them yet.

I never thought about using a magic eraser on the stems. You're talking about the "Mr. Clean Magic Eraser's" correct? Never thought about using Oxy Clean either. Glad it worked for you and I'll have to remember that the next time I have to do a heavy cleaning on one of my pipes.

Hey metalheadycigarguy, I was surprised the first time I read that tip too. They work great though, especially when in conjunction with some fine mesh steel wool. Here's another tip... don't buy the "BIGNAMEBRAND" version of the eraser. Your local big box hardware/retail store likely sells a generic version in a larger pack size for half the price. :D
Best,

I did use the Home Depot brand Pat. The guy at the store told me it was just as good and like you said, more product for less $$$$$
