what did you use for your texture?

Dremel with a small cutter and just worked the surface a bit.
You mentioned carved. what style knife did you use ? There is power carving and hand carving. The stain ,who's brand did you use?
I've done some hand carving in the past, I used all hand tools then xacto blades, files, sand paper, etc but I haven't worked alot of wood. I have a more general sculpting background from my art days, so I'm having to catch up on the wood specifics. Honestly the briar is so dense it almost feels like plaster or hardened clay at times, rather than wood.
The alcohol based leather dye I could find in town was Angelus at the local shoe repair shop. They have a large selection of colors and it seems to have worked fine.

Very nice. I've been thinking of buying a pre-drilled blank and busting out the Dremel. This may have given me the correct inspiration!
