The americn blends are quite difficult to find in Europe, but I have now found some mystrious ways to get one. I was thinking about buying one G.L. Pease and one McClelland, or two GLP or two McC. As I have bad experiences with Latakia I will try to avoid those, even if many of you will say I should try anyway. I want some feedback on what blends to go for, what are the diffrences between them, and some general discussion beyond just "take this or that". I have put my eyes on Cairo and Cumberland from GLP. I can say my preferances are basicly flakes and flake-like tobacco as Three nuns and Capstan(blue). Hope this can inspire to some good discusions. Thx. Christian

Welcome to the forums Subtech,
Now when you say latakia negatively effects you, do you mean you just do not enjoy the smokey flavor, or does it physically maybe give you a headache?
My experience with the few GL Pease blends I've tried have contained some form of latakia. They guy knows what he is doing for sure but personally I find many of his blends too complex for my tastes, but I do love Key Largo (a blend with some cigar leaf mixed in, comes in broken flakes).
McClelland is also another plus in my book. 5100 Red Cake is a big hit with me.
I haven't been around the block long enough to have experienced a whole lot of flake tobaccos; certaintly none by these two blenders.
Happy Smoking on your quest! :puffy:

I haven't smoked very many glp blends but I thought they all contained latakia.?. Maybe he'll chime in with some of his own thoughts. 5100 is the only McC flake I've tried and I'll second the suggestion.

In other words I'm useless here LOL

welcome aboard!

Thank for reply, Spartan. My experience with Latakia is not too great, but I have smoked Savanelli English Mixture and Davidoff English Mixture. They both had the same characteristic taste I can not stand. So I made a quick conclusion to not smoke Latakia again. Maybe a mistake, but for now I will go for other tobaccos. I smoke other than flakes, like Royal Yacht, I just mentioned it to give a hint about my preferances. I will take an extra look at the tobaccos you mentioned.

McClelland makes some very fine Virginia blends. I might suggest Dark Star, Virginia Woods, and #24 Flake.

I think GLP Cairo is great, a marvelous balance of Virginias with the subtle Oriental, but didn't care for Cumberland. I thought the Kentucky's were just too heavy & overwhelmed the Virginias for me.

I like just about all the McClelland Virginias I've tried. 5100 is a classic must-try. Christmas Cheer, Blackwoods Flake, Virginia Woods, Navy Cavendish, and 221B Honeydew are amongst ones I really like.

I would recommend GL Pease's Filmore -- it's my favorite Va/perique blend, by a long shot. I'd also recommend McClelland's Blackwoods Flake.
