Don't worry MSO, I googled the tail number and dude walked away. That makes it a great landing. Actually, the driver had quite a storied history in that plane with 11 aerial victories, awarded the DFC, AND was still alive by the end of the war! Sounds like a winner to me!
Amazing. A friend's dad joined the Royal Air Force in Canada before the U.S. entered WWII and flew with them as a fighter pilot in Europe, then joined the U.S. Army Air Corps and eventually graduated to the exalted status of a P-38 pilot by the end of the war. He must have been extraordinarily good to have flow missions for years. Remarkably low key guy; you wouldn't have guessed. Some of these guys are just born to it. Before the war he toured U.S. and Mexico on a motorcycle, which is often a credential for being trained as a pilot. (The Lockheed P-38 was perhaps the highest tech piston driven fighter plane before fighters went entirely to jet engines.)

Not for everyone, but I certainly like it when the urge hits. In fact, sometimes when I smell an old lady passing, I start drooling for a good GH tobacco.

I looked again at the photo and decided it wasn't a nose dive but rather an accident after landing that turned the plane on its nose. The propeller isn't broken and there isn't much damage to the front end. Still, I'd say the pilot was a very lucky flyer. It still could have been fatal, just getting thrown down six or eight feet.
If the photo is real, don't see any reason its not, they are no longer with us anyway.

I wonder if the plane might have been blown over from not being tied down properly? I agree it doesn't look like crash damage.

Hard to say exactly what took place, and the interwebs is not sure. Sounds like someone was probably at the controls and there was a minor accident. I doubt that the guy crash-landed nose-first. Probably had trouble on landing and the tail flipped up on him.
