PA burns better and more completely than many finer blends and tastes reasonably good too. It requires fewer relights, burns more evenly than most, and does not overheat. Also, it holds its flavor nicely over time, doesn't go flat on you. So yes, there's a reason our grandfathers really liked this stuff, even when they were young firebrands. On the other hand, for whatever reason, I can't get a lick of flavor out of Sir Walter Raleigh, but I'm glad many do. Half-and-Half I find bitey and harsh. Carter Hall and Granger, along with PA, I find high quality.

There is also something immensely satisfying about taking cob and pouch into the wild, with few complexities to get between oneself, pipe and task.

I prefer PA over CH... but I have to be in the mood for it. That doesn't happen often, but I always keep a tub on hand.

Between the Heart of Alabama and Hot Springs NC
I have a friend who smokes nothing but PA, and he does nothing but smoke PA, all day, all night, while eating, sleeping, even in the rain. I am still not even sure where he gets it. He doesn't have a car, no where in town has it, and I don't think he has any sort of electronics. But, he seems to have some never-ending supply. He is also the meanest, surliest, old codger you could ever meet, but the best friend in the world. His insults never fail to crack me up.
Now, I always associate PA with surly old men. I actually came to this thread thinking I might have to break up a fight, ha ha.

I love PA, but must be one of the only one here that thinks CH is floor sweepings. But on the good side that's more for you guys!

I've been enjoying Prince Andrew quite a bit, in cob and briar, but mainly cob. Haven't tried the original.

I've been smoking more SWR lately, but I burned a couple bowls of PA in a row in a MM Country Gentleman earlier ... enjoyed that!
And I was mostly not surly hardly at all this afternoon!

I have tried them all - the codger blends - and I have found two that I can smoke regularly. They are Velvet and Half and Half. For whatever reason I can't seem to develop a taster for Carter Hall. I have tried and tried to like it based on all the comments on the forums but I just don't seem to like it. Just this morning I was thinking of buying another pouch to see if I would change my mind. Its funny though, that I now have a tub of Velvet and Half and Half on my shelves along with the high end stuff.
