My much loved 11 year old Welsh Terrier known in our family as Crabby and, more often, baby has barely been sick a day in her life. Not feeling well for the last few days i called our vet to check her out. The vet had a cancellation so i left work and brought her in. To my immense grief my old girl has a large tumor in her stomach....i try very hard to keep life in perspective and i really do know that other people are suffering with things greater, but my goodness my heart is breaking. The outside and inside of a dog is good for the inside of a human but there is a profound price of admission....

that blows. Try and spoil the beast a little bit. My first cat had a massive tumor in his lung. More accurate he had a mass of tumors where his one lung was supposed to be. The only comfort I can add is that 11 years is packed with a lot of living, loving, and all the things a dog could ever want. And any one that gives you guff for crying I'll personally slap if that helps.

Always tough…

Ted Yost on Losing dogs:

“For all the companionship, fun, and unconditional love we get from our dogs, there's a steep price to be paid. We nibble away at it, trying to return all they share with us, but we fall short. On their last day, when it's time to take them for that final ride, that debt gets paid. And it's hard.”

Every happy day for a dog is like 100 years for them. My current dog might live another 6 years, might be well less, every time I go to the vet I learn some other horrible thing about him, from his previous life. And so I just appreciate him every day, what he brings me, and what I bring him. I hope Crabby's prognosis is good, but I also understand that dogs kinda go from "okay" to "not okay" pretty quick sometimes, and part of owning them is making decisions that they can't make, for better or worse.

Crabby has attained the true love and adoration of her people. I hope she stays around for some time longer, but trust that she has the best in life and will remain with you after she has finished her life. She has worked her wonders on you, so when the time is right, she will send along another four-footed friend to make sure you remain under the supervision of another animal companion. These creatures know what they're doing, rest assured. They are innocent in one way, but knowing.

Is it operable? What's the vet's prognosis?
Thanks for the kind concern expressed by all. The chances are great that it is malignant. We will, of course, have a ultrasound and biopsy done. But, given her age it is unlikely that we would opt for surgery and chemo. The statistics show that dogs who have that level of treatment really only live for a couple of extra months. I really do appreciate the kind words and support expressed...

Sorry and sad to hear this Merton! They are a great source of comfort to us humans and it is very hard to loose a close friend such as your Crabby.
Peace to you and your family sir!

hope it turns out to be that toy that disapeared a while ago and not an actual tumor.

Grief and heartache are the price we pay for the unconditional love animals give us undeserving humans. I am so sorry that you and Crabby are going through this. I hope there is either something that can be done, or that you have a wonderful last while together. #fuckcancer

Very sorry to hear it...dogs are heartbreaking. I've been through it before, and my current one is 9 and just starting to show signs of aging...don't want to think about dealing with it in the next few years, but I know it's coming.

The greatest injustice in the Universe is the unequal lifespan of dogs and humans.
On the one hand I agree, but there are so many unwanted dogs in shelters and end up being put down, that I just think how much worse it would be if they lived a lot longer.
