My Computer Took A Dump

It was a big dump as my dog knocked it off my couch and busted the thingy that holds the power cord. I called my computer guy and he came over to grab it and order the part to fix it. This was the perfect opportunity to buy a new laptop. I said, yo Harris, the old computer will be out of commission for days, you cannot be offline any more than you already have( 1.75 days).
So I go to Bestbuy, looked at what they have and got me a new Dell that has a touch screen and all the toys. It is a 13 inch one and light as a feather. It has the keys that light up which is awesome for a blind bastard like moi. I am not looking forward to taking all the files, pictures, music and what ever else and downloading it to this computer. I have an external hard drive which can hold a terabyte. Thank goodness I no longer have my 5 gigabyte porn collection to transfer ( if it wasn't for porn the internet never would have taken off like it did) me and my friends single handedly kept the internet going the first few years.
This is my first look at Windows 10 as my last computer was running Vista. So far it is going ok, it will take me time to figure out the nuances and be comfortable with it.

If you have read this entire novella, sorry for wasting 10 minutes of your life that you will never get back.

My first computer was a business one and it was a Tandy 1000 bought in 1990. My first home computer was a Gateway 133 mhz with monitor cost 2400.00. Crazy what I have now in comparison for a third of the price.

I retired after 40 years in IT doing about everything that came along. I had a ThinkPad and a desktop on XP. A newer laptop running 7 which MS insisted constantly that I needed to upgrade to 10 before the world ended. So, I spent some time moving pictures, music, etc to the cloud and bought a Chromebook and will never go back. I shutdown the old ThinkPad and desktop.

Do you mean to tell me that Microsoft has upgraded with a new OS since Windows 95!
I used to be a computer operator for an insurance company on an IBM 360 Model 20 back in the late 60's. It took over three hours every day just to do a simple update for the new policies that came in each day. If by chance the air conditioning went out, which it did on occasion, so did the computer!

You mean updates? I've got a win2k system running here, several XPs and a 7 or two.
I do not like the model where one company makes OS and hardware. Too much control. Very 1970s.
I also don't like Apple, mainly because of (1) substandard hardware and (2) predatory upgrade policy.
I'm not the biggest MSFT fan, but then again, the Open Source guys seem to screw up exactly the same way, suggesting it's a function of humans more than a specific company.
I like Windows 10 so far. I'd give it a strong B+ on perfecting Windows, and a C on vision.

When you think about it, we're using late 1960s-1970s technology that has just been upgraded to run faster and bigger. No real innovation since that time. Changes how you see everything.

You're either buying bad hardware, or doing something wrong.

Predatory upgrade policy ?

Yes, try adding peripherals internally and you'll see what I mean. Not meant to be upgraded or expanded for the most part, and they make a lot of money charging you for installing it the first time around.

If you're replacing your computer every year, something is wrong.
One hint: to a repair shop, a computer infected with a bunch of viruses means a couple hours of work. If they tell you the hardware died, they get to charge you an hour for diagnostics and have you buy a new machine, for about two minutes of work. FYI/YMMV/FWIW.

It's not that hard to build your own desktop computer. You don't save much money but if something does go out on it you can fix it yourself. That's where you save a lot of money.

A good point. You can also choose your operating system that way (Windows, Linux, BSD, Android, etc). Although you have to work around Apple's "must run on a real Macintosh" protection if you want to install their operating system.

My hat's off to anyone who can build his own fast and secure computer. But then you have to run software other than Mac. (I also choose to not build my own microwave or car)
With a Mac, you can run Windows natively, or as a sub. And it's based on Unix, more or less.
