I have smoked cobs for years and only once have seen a burnout. It was my BiL's pipe and he was freight training that thing as a new smoker. Burnt out the bottom.
Personally, never had an issue. I love MM cobs they are a staple in my rotation and used at least once a day! Great pipes.
As far as breaking them in I guess I've never bothered/thought about it. They smoke fantastically from the first bowl and I always look forward to a new one. Seem to be one of few pipes that do that.

Thanks for your response Phil!
I occasionally smoke a briar, maybe 1 in 20 bowls.
I truly do prefer them over briars or any other type of pipe because of the way they smoke
That pretty much sums up my experience!
My favorites are the Washington, Legend and County Gentleman ... keep up the great work! :puffy:

I have over a dozen cobs, three of which are Freehands. A few are artisans. My favorites, depending on the mood and the tobacco being burned, are the Patriots, the Freehands, the General and the Mark Twain. I smoke a Freehand, General or Patriot about half the time, and rotate equally through the others.
I reserve a Country Gentleman and an Eaton for Lakeland and aromatics. I smoke my briars maybe four or five times a month. (Although I just ordered a Caramella Rustic 628 Savinelli from Sommilkisgood a few minutes ago.)
