Well after being bitten by the Ebay bug i picked up and got a couple of pipes.
The first is an English Briar no name. Not the best pipe in the world by any stretch of the imagination with a bit of scorching to the rim but only cost a few quid so am not expecting too much

The second is a Savory's Argyll 95. Feels nice in the hand and is a good weight. I looked the company up and they seemed to be one of the Dunhill seconds companies so hopefully it's a good smoker.

Being a billiard fan, that Savory's is smokin'! Seriously nice grain and an interesting, very Peterson-ish, chubby profile. Great pick-ups and may they smoke the smoke of angels for you!

That Savory Argyll would be an interesting pipe to research. The pipe logos website, pipephil.eu usually indicates whether a brand is a second, but for Savory they only say "Brand created in 1885 by H.L. Savory & Co."
That I could find, they are only touted as Dunhill seconds on auction sites, which have an obvious interest in attaching the Dunhill name to the article. There is an excellent possibility that the two company names were conflated because the Dunhill pipeshop's famous "Savory Mixture" was casually called "Dunhill's Savory". Pipedia.org lists Savory as a Dunhill second, but they offer no explanation; and, as a "wiki"-site, has dubious authority. I think one really needs to find a book on Dunhill history to clear this up.
In any event, it's a nifty looking pipe, and should be judged on its own merits.

Hi Cortez, Would be interesting and is something i might look into.

I did look up the brand on the internet and a couple of places referenced them as Dunhill seconds as Dunhill took over H.L Savory & Co but i know how inaccurate the internet can be. After all if something is written on a site it can then easily be copied to others and all of a sudden it is considered to be fact.
As the knowledge on this site is far greater than most websites, is there anyone out there that can testify to the Dunhill Seconds comment?
Besides, no matter if it isn't a Dunhill second i didn't pay a large amount for it and it feels great in the hand. This weekend will be the first smoke with it and as long as it smokes well I'll be happy :puffy:
