Must try G.L. Pease?

Hello everyone!

So I'm relatively new to the game and I'm at the point that I just want to try everything. I keep reading the name G.L. Pease and find it mysteriously lacking from my small collection, hence the potentially controversial post.

Just curious what everyone's thoughts are on a "have to try" G.L. Pease blend? Also, I'm not looking for the holygrails, the "this-was-the-best-in-the-day-but-impossible-to-find" blends, or anything discontinued

I know this is relatively vague so perhaps it could be broken into a simple:

• English
• Va/VaPer
• Balkan
• Burley

GLP is one of the primo blenders with an extremely wide range of styles and tobaccos. Currently, I'm smoking a tin of his Barbary Coast, based in cube cut burly, with Perique and brandy flavoring, a pleasant blend, flavorful but not at all overbearing. A lot of people love his Westminster, an English blend.

VaPer: Telegraph Hill. This is middle of the road for his VaPer offerings, so a good starting place.

Straight Viriginia: Union Square. A nice mix of medium dark Virginias with enough bright leaf to keep it interesting.

VaOr: Cairo. Fairly light for Pease blends, but very good.

Burley: Barbary Coast. Stout cube cut burley, red Virginia, perique, and a brandy topping. Very satisfying

Grab Bag: Windjammer. Virginia forward, but plenty of burley, perique, and a rum topping. Complex and rich.

I don’t dig Latakia, but Im sure others can opine on his many highly regarded English and Balkan blends

Key Largo is just great. I just finished my second coffee can of the stuff. 8oz tins are like coffee cans. The one suggestion is don't bother with the sample size (2oz tins) just buy the biggest size available.

A post like this here, if it draws enough attention, will inevitably end up with responses that list everything under the sun. As a shortcut, you might as well just peruse this list from the man himself: G. L. I'd start with Abingdon, Odyssey, and Hado's Delight, but that's just me. Happy hunting!

I think that you will find interesting blends in all categories. I rarely smoke English, so I'll limit my recommendations to just Virginias and Va/Pers in no particular order.

Virginia: Union Square

Va/Per: Stratford, Filmore, Telegraph Hill, Haddo's Delight

Just repeating what others have said about Telegraph Hill. After decades of piping I only just tried this for the first time. A great middle of the road VaPer. Nice mellow all day smoke. Cheers.

The only ones worth a snot are Quiet Nights, Meridian, and Cairo. Telegraph Hill and Union Square are ok, but I much prefer European-made Virginia and VaPer.

Ohhh... the only GL Pease blend I've tried is Union Square, a nice change of pace from brighter Virginia blends.

I didn't see Embarcadero on the lists above...to my taste it is better than Cairo. Union Square with some age is great. And Fillmore is fantastic if you wait 3 years (otherwise it is good, but not great).

I haven’t tried a lot of his blends, maybe a dozen or so and the ones that really jumped out to me in a good way was: Triple Play and Union Square.

Every GLP blend I’ve tried is great. You could pretty much smoke their blends exclusively. Westminster is one I keep a lot of.

For English and Balkan I like Abingdon, Chelsea Morning, Maltese Falcon, Meridian and Spark Plug.

Well based on my cellar I’m going to say windjammer as it’s the one I have the most stockpiled.
