What an amazing list of musicians and composers. Sablebrush, I wish I could sit down for a few hours with you to learn about all the classic composers. I'm only familiar with a few, primarily Back, Vivaldi, the standards. I'm also quite fond of Vaughn Williams.
I like Warren Zevon. Changed his motto "enjoy every sandwich" to "enjoy every pipe"...

@smeigs. If you like Ed Sheeran you might want to check out Damien Rice and Nizlopi, they are some of his greater influences. Check out Damien rice's song '9 crimes' or 'Volcano' and from Nizlopi I can say that 'All My Life' is probably their best song. But both artists fall somewhere in the Singer-Songwriter category and are well worth the time it takes to look them up IMHO.
How anyone can relax to metal music is beyond me. Having the singer sound like he's getting stabbed repeatedly in the back with an ice pick and being unable to understand any of the lyrics is another form of insanity. The Sheeple will always follow the trends of their peers, whether they like things or not. Conformance and accceptance is the driving force of our society.

I usually smoke with my laptop open and Spotify on. I have an eclectic taste in music. My heart is in 90s alternative/grunge. I also listen to classic rock, which is on tonight, 80s and 90s R&B, pop rock country (I despise the country music pre 1980s), also listen to some Dubliners and Wolfe Tones from time to time. Sometimes I'll put on some 90s hip-hop or reggae. I'm also a big fan of the crooners Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, and Nat King Cole. To me those guys embody pipe smoking music.
Hahaha Hobie that is hilarious!! I don't think it's necessarily about following peers though, I would say it's about enjoying an art. All music is art in one form of another, you may like a clean realistic panting, others may like things that are a little more abstract and dark. I would say that metal is just another form of art that floats some people's boats. Definitely takes some time to get into, no doubt you think the paintings that are random ink blots that sell for millions and look absolutely heinous are ridiculous. But they are both very similar, not a lot of people understand what's going on and what makes either of them art, there are some who do and still do not like it and lastly their are the few that get what's goin on in the music and lyrics and they appreciate the time, energy, and passion that was put into the random ink thrown over a canvas, metal music.
Hobie, I don't anyone will find it necessary to "flame" you. We tend to be fond of the kind of music we grew up with. You are right about some of the vocal performers of metal; I too wish they were more comprehensible. (That's why such music often has lyrics included in printed form with the CD.) But it is what it is. Rap music has understandable lyrics, but I cannot think of music more repulsive. On the other hand, Bing Crosby's delightful Christmas album, last I heard, is still a top selling album during the holiday season. So there you have it.
I think both metal and hip-hop are two genres that unless you grew up with them you won't understand them.

Hobie, my only bone to pick here is the "sheeple" description.
I listen to music I genuinely like. I've spent hours listening to different artists to find what I enjoy, just like anyone else, and I buy music from those whose work I personally find to be beautiful and talented. I completely understand why someone wouldn't enjoy metal, just as I don't enjoy pop, country or bluegrass. It's a polarizing "love it or hate it" taste, just like latakia and lakelands.
And I doubt your flame suit even registered that :

I listen to a lot of classic rock on the radio but when I'm kicking back and relaxing with a pipe or making pipes in the workshop I'm usually listening to Mississippi Delta Blues like Son House, Charlie Patton, Robert Johnson, Honeyboy Edwards, or Peetie Wheatstraw. Another favorite is Miles Davis, especially "Kind of Blue." I also listen to Chris Thile and Punch Brothers a lot in the shop.
