I think Royal Yacht is a bit stronger than Nightcap in the nicotine department, but it's been a while since I've smoked it. It could be an older tin, though smoother and perhaps more sublime in flavor, could have lost a little bit of its punch.

I am not a fan of Latakia myself but still 'upvoted' the review as I did indeed find it helpful as it forewarned me of the said Latakia content :wink:

This post inspired me to revisit Royal Yacht last night. I did a comparison with G&H Dark Birdseye--another blend that seems in the same basic neighborhood--high nicotine, Dark VA, but no top note like RY.
I smoked Royal Yacht first and was reminded how bracing this tobacco was. I most commonly experience this rousing quality in Burleys. I find strong Burleys somewhat astringent--not necessarily in a bad way. Royal Yacht, though not Burley, struck me this way. It was quite spicy, and would give me a shiver when expelling the smoke from my nostrils.
In comparison, the Birdseye seemed very smooth. Though it has a robust taste in its own right, it doesn't quite have the sass of Royal Yacht.
The nicotine of both was substantial, though I think Birdseye was certainly the heavier hitter, that doesn't mean Royal Yacht isn't strong.
It sounds like either 1) the Royal Yacht has mellowed a bit over the years, or 2) the quality that I perceive as "bracing" in Royal Yacht (and I also find in some Burley blends), you perceive differently, which could easily be the case. I think I've noticed you mentioning strong Burleys as favorites.

MSO- I popped a tin of 2008 RY last year. I found it to be similar to your first bowl. I threw the whole Mason jar in the toaster oven at 200 for an hour or so and BAM, delicious. It rounded the blend out nicely. Worth a shot if your next bowls aren't scintillating. IIRC, pipestud highly recommended baking RY, which is why I did it.
Thanks, Jay. I can't taste many of the flavors that many reviewers speak of. But I do like latakia, and suspect one day you'll find a nice mixture with the right amount of lat.
Okay, second bowl in one of my nicest, a Ser Jacopo blast/bent square shanked Dublin. Yep, I get it. Since I drew attention to myself with the long delay, I'll say just a little more, hoping I'm not being a blabbermouth. Your enjoyment of this grand old blend probably depends on both your attraction to this particular Virginia blend, which I like but which may be an acquired taste for some, and its flavoring with the undertone but definite zest of plum, plus you have to enjoy or tolerate the nicotine. All of that goes down well with me, and I think I'll smoke this right along, with the various other Dunhill favorites -- Nightcap, 965, and London Mixture. mawn', thanks for the prompt on this. I had no idea I was yakking like a parrot about my aging tin of RY, but I'm glad to have tried it and I expect to enjoy it in the future. I'm not trying to summarize the thread. I may report again on my third bowl. But this has been fun, and also resulted in two good smokes.
More proof that I am a horrible tobacco reviewer - I don't taste plum. I taste something more along the lines of caramel. Now, everything I read says I should taste plum, but I just don't.
I've always felt it was a port aroma from the Royal Yacht. It has a dry, fermented whiff to it that makes me say port over plum.
That said, I only really detect it in the tin note, not the smoke itself.

With the Murray era tins I get no topping taste of any kind, plum or caramel. In the newer version of RY, I do taste something like caramel in the bowl. I actually prefer the Murrays era stuff, but enjoy both. I hope the new stuff will end up like the Murrays era stuff with age,
Smoking the bowl last night I was struck by this. It seems Dunhill blends (those I've tried) come at a perfect moisture and burn beautifully. Not a must for me, but certainly a plus.

You were doing no such thing my friend, it just struck me that deep down you really wanted to try it but for whatever reason you never got around to it.
I for one am so glad that you are enjoying it thus far, I would have felt awfully guilty had you popped your tin prematurely only to find you hated it, then of course everyone would have said you should have sat on it a while longer.
