Pegasus is a favorite as is Crooner.

Crooner is a must try, you may love it or you may not. I love it. Quality burley and a naturally sweet herb.

Pegasus is a blend of three burleys and two Virginias and is a masterful combination

Granger is my fav among the old time codgers.

On edit. Some Honorable mentions

Haunted Bookshop is less sweet than any I’ve listed above. It has a touch of Perique.

University Flake has a Berry topping thats delightfully done.

Solani - So many others enjoy it. I never got much from it but we’re all different.

Uhles 00 and 300 and Perfectinn Plug. I’d have to believe that one of these 3 will satisfy. Varying degrees of honey graham sweetness. Not cloying. Lightly topped quality burley.

C&D - Best Burley Selection to be found. Enjoy the Burley Flake collection. # 2 is my choice.

The classic codger blends are a perfect entry into burley, because they smooth out the rough edges. I love SWR, but apparently the new stuff is doused in vinegar, so be careful.
If you like them, branch out from there. Lots of good recommendations in this thread.

Before you go and buy a tub of Walt, check out Jim’s review of the current production
I was going to say this, as well.

I really like Crooner. I know it is love/hate with the deertongue, but I upvote the notion you should try it.

I also like Haunted Bookshelf, but I have to sip that one and that is hard because I have ADHD and tend to hoover my pipes.

Old Joe Kranz is highly regarded, but I haven't tried it.

Good luck in your journey!

Oh, Chatham manor is an H&H product which will be disappearing soon in the STG shitshow. Mixture 79 (which I found I love) is a Sutliff blend on the chopping block. KBV and Boswell are likely to change soon with the disappearance of Sutliff blending components. Just an FYI.

For lightly topped Burley blends you can't go wrong with Carter Hall and Prince Albert. You can get small samples of both of them from 4Noggins if you'd rather not buy a whole tub just to try them out.

While not topped with any added flavorings, I'd also recommend Cornell & Diehl Pegasus and Haunted Bookshop. They're both "must try" Burley blends in my book! puffy

I'm smoking a bowl of two timer right now for the first time and I came right here to nerd out about it and I see this! lol.
it really is great stuff. It’s been years since I last had it. Has it changed much since Mark sold D&R

Daughters & Ryan Two Timer is pure burley. My favorite burley blend is Pegasus.
I'm smoking my 1st bowl of it as I type, as a burley enjoyer, it's fantastic! Burns a little hot for me, if you go slow it's rewarding lot's of burley flavors the toasty, the nutty, cocoa, all that.

I hesitated for several years after I took up pipe smoking to get into burley blends because someone had said they were cigarette like. I hate cigarettes, and these days I smoke more burley blends than just about anything else. I would say the codger blends listed above are all a great place to start; easy to acquire, easier still to back, and smoke like a dream. Enough has been said about them already, I won't repeat it all here.

I will toss in an additional thumbs up for Country Squire's Sweet Burley and their Meriwether as well, although that is maybe more "sweet" than "burley."

I'll also toss in a caveat about some of the more popular burley blends. I'm a huge wimp when it comes to "stout" blends, whether they're just strong in flavor or high in nicotine - I just don't care for them and they don't agree with me. Having said that, I'd tried and tried to like a number of the blends that get recommended over and over such as Haunted Bookshop, Old Joe Krantz, or Big 'n Burley. I don't know if you've ever wanted to like something before, but I really wanted to like HB and at some point I just had to say "enough" and admit that it just isn't a blend for me. Carter Hall, Half & Half, or almost any rendition of Edgeworth/Ready Rubbed, I'm in all day long. But HB and those serious burley blends are not for me. I don't know where your palette falls on that spectrum, but do take note that not all burley blends are created equal on that scale of Pleasant/Mild --> Strong/Full. Find where you settle in on that scale and enjoy those blends, wherever they may be.

Amphora Burley was a good "pure burley" that wasn't too strong, but now I don't know what equivalent is out there with the Amphora blends going away.

Same hesitation for me. Thanks for the write up.

My how times have changed. Used to be when someone was asking about burley blends one of the first names would be Uhle's, making top quality burley blends since 1939.

Or anything at LJ Peretti or Uhle's that strikes your fancy

The other Burleys I would recommend have been caught up in the STG/Mac Baren closure
