Movie Music

Once in a while I see a movie that I really like the soundtrack to and end up buying it. Doesn't happen a lot, but I have some that go back quite a while ago. I came across this soundtrack to Baz Luhrmann's 1996 movie Romeo and Juliet. It was so weird and the music was equally weird in its variety. The movie was interesting for me as it used Shakespeare's play word for word as it was written but put in a modern day fantasy situation, with an eye for detail. (Browning handgun stamped, Sword-9mm) Wildly creative filming and great performances by the actors. Staring a young Leo DiCaprio and Claire Danes along with John Leguizamo and Paul Sorvino and many others. Perhaps not everyone's cup of tea, but I liked it and it introduced me to some music I was not familiar with including my favorite song from the movie, #1 Crush by Garbage. Other interesting music from some more familiar bands like The Cardigans, Butthole Surfers and Radiohead. The movie I found unforgettable as well as the soundtrack. I'm glad I put it on to play as it brought back some fun memories from the 1990's.

WAY too many to go into, but one that comes to mind is The Ghost And Mrs Muir from 1947, starring Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison. The score, by the amazing Bernard Herrmann, is perfectly wedded to the hauntingly beautiful moodiness of the images.

Dirty Harry, Coffy and Chinatown all come to mind.

Although come to think of it, I never saw a Blaxploitation film with anything less than at least a pretty good soundtrack.

That soundtrack was incredible. I also enjoyed all three of the Guardians of the Galaxy ones.

The scores for “Anatomy Of A Murder” and “Bullitt” are great - I enjoy them on vinyl. But tons of great ones out there - I lean towards older ones and much older ones.

Forrest Gump had a good soundtrack.

One that I saw a few months ago.... Cruella. The movie was ok, the kids really liked it, but the soundtrack was killer.

In the movie Battleship, the scene when the WW2 vets fire up the USS Missouri to destroy the aliens after the aliens destroy a bunch of Destroyers....and "Thunderstruck" from AC-DC starts playing gives an old soldier like me goose bumps. Yep, im a sap.

Speaking of Radiohead, we about gave my mom a stroke when she heard our band cover "Creep" at a friend's wedding. The groom requested it. My mom had never heard me swear before....ever. So the word fu**ing several times shocked her, but she loved it.

He has so many amazing scores, and extremely recognizable. Hadn't seen anything in forever with a Herrmann score, last week or something we finally watched "Ratched" on Netflix and from the first 2 bars of music, I was like, "wait, is that Herrmann? Can't be, he's long dead, pretty sure 'Taxi Driver' was the last thing he scored..."

Apparently, Mac Quayle (the one who did the score) in scoring "Ratched", was heavily influenced by Herrmann's score for "Cape Fear" (the original one from the '60's, obviously) I honestly thought for a minute that they dug up some old Herrmann scores. Quayle did a good job capturing those vibes.

I grew up in a church that played great gospel music. The remake of True Grit had an excellent soundtrack.

Loved that movie and Neil Young's guitar! Jim Jarmusch made a masterful strange movie and probably the last movie that Robert Mitchum did too.

When I went to see Star Wars: Episode IV as a kid my dad bought the soundtrack on tape and I used to love that.
