+1 for Boswell's.
They sell lots of aromatics; I mean...it only seems right that you stock up on Boswell's "Christmas Cookie" with the upcoming holiday season. Try Berry Cobbler also. You will be thankful and so will anyone who accompanies you during one of these smokes.
Also, Lane Limited 1-Q seems to be the quintessential beginner's aromatic. It is quite lovely.
Lastly, I smoked on and off through college, and have recently started once again. This latest experience has been a total change due in part to the knowledge from these forums. Read the posts, pickup on the advice.
Biggest recommendations that have changed my smoking experience drastically are:
1. Smoke slowly and keep the bowl as cool as possibly without constantly having to relight (you will pick up so many more flavors than smoking it hot).
2. Don't get stressed about relights, time between puffs, etc. Every tobacco/bowl/person smokes differently. Just keep trying out different ways and types, and you'll figure it out on your own.
Note: I'm nowhere near being a "good" pipe smoker. My pipes go out; I screw up the packing; and yes, I too get frustrated. But if you keep in mind to relax and enjoy the entire experience, even the failures. You will find an experience to love.
