Looks pretty nice right BBB Own Make Virgin #507 made in London England. No fills, nice balance, excellent piece of briar. Other than a little tooth chatter on the stem that could easily be buffed out there are no visible problems . Now the problem with this pipe… it gets so unbearably hot that it burns your fingers, I’ve tried sipping so light I couldn’t keep it lit! Even lighting this pipe causes it to become so hot you cant touch it, No Matter the pack! I think it may be a flaw in the grain like in picture #3,and when I say hot 🥵i mean it stays hot! I’m open to suggestions if anyone has one. i Have owned this pipe 20 years and counting, but gave up on smoking it long ago.image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg

Could you post a picture of the chamber ? I suspect some of those birdseyes have pinholes that are transmitting heat. The only real fix is to pipemud the inside and seal the outside holes with woodfiller but you have to find them. Coat the pipe in wax and smoke it and they will appear as steamholes. But fixing it may disturb the finish. Might be better to keep it as an unsmokable display peace.

Based on the way it’s darker on the exterior towards the bottom, I’d say you have some thin chamber walls. It gonna get hot. Some Dublins are like that. Hold it by the shank.

Does it get hot in one spot, or is the heat evenly distributed through the bowl? I have two pipes that get super hot like that, and it's because the chamber walls are 1/8" thick. Nothing for it but to allow cake to build up somewhat thicker than normal.

As you can see the walls are ”kinda” thin but nothing that would cause so much heat so quick. This pipe was definitely used by Someone when I got it, also I have tried smoking it about a dozen times. bowl even has a little cake build on itimage.jpg

Definitely gets hot all around and walls are not that thin at all, there is a thin cake layer. the previous owner used this pipe a bit as you can see. I have also tried using it a lot but it’s not very pleasant. i never tried yanking that straw out of the stem, maybe that would slow the draw a bit, it’s stuck pretty good so I left it in place.image.jpgimage.jpg

I agree there is sufficient cake to line the chamber,,.., you would have to bring that down to line the walls with pipe mud. I don't think its worth it, I have a butz-choquin calabash with the same problem... thin walls and gets hot. I have to barely sip it when I smoke it otherwise the outside stain starts to discolor and melt. It happens... not the answer you want I know., You could also try some kind of wrap like leather.
You can see where the pipe is turning brown from the heat (an almost $300 hand made pipe probably shouldn't do this):
