Deep South skeeters ain’t no joke. When working outside best repellent I know is a little diesel fuel on the back of the neck, a little on the arms. I’m not saying bath in it, just a little does the trick. Would ruin the pipe smoking experience but works wonders otherwise.

Those pesky bugs, make it difficult to enjoy a pipe.....we have been having alot of rainy and wet weather here! Guess I need to lit a citronella candle with my pipe
I found that spraying a cloth with something that has deet in it works. I put the cloth on something near me that way I don't have deet on my skin. Here there is this terrible hornet that swarms. This little creature loves meat and is killed by dangling baloney over a stick over water so it drops in and drowns.

They don't bother me either. I get maybe 5 bites a year. We have a pond in the front yard, a pond In the back yard and a creek connecting them.....and we are next to a swamp.
We have tons of very happy bats too.

What's weird is the townie mosquitos ignore me and the woods mosquitos seem to think that I should be drained of all blood. Weirdly as I said they have preferences for different people types. Oddly specific things that really shouldn't make a difference sometimes.

Well, while we're raving about mosquitoes, here in the Commonwealth of Virginia, there are plenty. My recent favorite, which pipe smoking has no effect on are ticks!

I was hopeful when I took up a pipe that it would keep all kinds of insects away from me whilst outside. I have found that it does absolutely NOTHING in that department for me. It's been a little "still" at my location for a bit but I'll be getting more regular afternoon / evening breezes soon. Being on a hilltop helps with that most of the time.

This is one of the funniest threads on any subject I have seen anywhere. My pipe seems to keep them away, and when I am not smoking they spend more time attacking my wife than they do me. And we have different blood types.

I will start off with, any insect that bites and is within a hundred yards will find me and after being bitten I will itch for about 2 days from the bite. I not only attract them but am allergic to their bites.

My son gave me a Thermacell, a portable model to use when we go turkey hunting. Here in NJ you have to sit and call them in, so you are on the ground sitting in the vegitation. When using it I havent been bothered by any swarming, flying critters ! I love it. Looking at their site I see that they make tabletop models. I have used my portable when sitting out and it works fine.

For ticks, that someone mentioned, i spray my outdoor work and hunting clothes with Permethrin and that works great. I buy the concentrate and put it in a spray bottle. I dampen the clothes I will be wearing and let them dry overnight. Paying particular attention to shoes or boots and pants. Next day, no odor and no ticks.
