I love my morta pipes and smoke them about the same as briar. I would caution that the comparison to meer is deceptive and only really works when talking about ghosting.

As we have janka ratings for briar, but not for morta, (just the original oak which is higher than briar)....we cannot give educated accounts of differences between the materials.

Thus, break in, clean and smoke as normal until something you experience tells you not to.

Josef Prammer (Austrian pipe maker) commissioned a university study into morta - age vs density/mineral content and their effects on smoking characteristics. It's not 100% science fact, as the smokability issue is subjective, rather than objective. But at least he was curious enough to initiate a study.

It's a really interesting study too. There's no direct correlation between the study and the janka standard but it's great research and fascinating results. Especially so as it comes to the color of the morta.

That's a beautiful collection of morta's @OzPiper. They all look great, but I really like the Moretti bulldog and the Dotter.
Both the Moretti bulldog and Dotter canted egg with black bamboo were commissions.

I saw a Morretti bulldog I really liked, contacted Marco Biagini and asked if he could make me a similar pipe but in light-coloured morta with a horn stem. He got back to me within 24hrs, discussed what I would like, and what was possible, agreed to a price, and I received the pipe within 3 weeks. Marco is a gentleman, and a delight to deal with.

The Dotter again resulted from a sold pipe I saw on Domagoj's site. He is an industrial designer which explains his design philosophy and attention to detail. I requested a morta pipe rather than briar (I was in a morta PAD phase). Again a pleasure to deal with.
The Reiner Thilo and Josef Prammer were also pipes purchased after contacting both of them directly. The Thilo has the best deep blast I have seen in a morta, and despite the size, is light enough to to clench comfortably.
