Becker gets his Morta from a Bog in Germany, though I imagine any Bog will do LOL, mine tend to cake up fast, Roths scrape and paper towel method is used, I smoke only Nitecap in it, dry smoke like a Meer , also cool but when I smoke them I make myself to slow, slow puffs. The old cajun

peckinpahhombre,

I have 1 Morta by Tom Richard and tried my first smoke with Davidoff Flake Medallions which it took 3 to fill it. Smoked hot if pushed and got some hints of smokiness but went away as I smoked through the different layers of this tobacco. It smoked down to total ash and was so satisfying I am dedicating this pipe to this tobak and ordering more to cellar.

Gorgeous pipe fish. I love the triation on the morta. The smoky scent in mine seem to be going away.
I haven't smoked my new askwith morta yet, by Chris told me to "take it easy until I develop a nice even cke on the morta and to try to always keep the cake very thin and even"

I just ordered 5 tins....... I've read thinner than a dime as would be what is considered correct for a briar. Mine is just about an even thickness and will simply wipe it once cooled to maintain it. Chris is making some fine Morta pipes as would be expected.

Speaking of Rad Davis. I was looking at his past pipes and did not see any with bamboo shanks, anyone know if he offers this? I emailed him to ask and if he says yes I am considering commissioning a squashed tomato bowl Morta with a black bamboo 2 knuckle shaft with amber colored bit, if only plain bamboo is available then a Cumberland bit.

Well Rad Davis did get back to me and said he'd be glad to do up a pipe for me and is digging to find some Morta. In the mean time I added a Moretti to the fold.

fish, awesome looking Morta collection. Nice to hear you like how a Vaper flake smokes in it, have you smoked any straight Virginia Flakes in any of them and if so how do they perform?

I have never heard of this kind of pipe before and the grain and beauty of these pipes is just incredible. I had to look up morta because I didn't understand the reference someone made about cleaning them similarly to meerschaum. Semi petrified wood huh? Great, just something else I now HAVE to have.

Cigrmaster,

So far I have smoked Davidoff Flake Medallions in the Richard and Askwith and they both smoked to nothing but ash of course this is a Vaper. I smoked Troost Slices in the Moretti and Caledonian Virginia Flake in the Davorian both smoked to ash but Davorian took more effort and I found the problem was the hole inside the bowl had a flap of wood that did not come off from the drilling and I fixed it but haven't smoked it since and plan to shortly. My next Morta smoke will be the Askwith with either FVF or some 1996 Red Flake and will reply my experience.

Can't wait to see your commission Roth.
My Moretti smokes very well and I have not detected the smokey scent since the first 10 or 12 bowls.

Smoked some FVF in the Askwith Morta for the last pipe of the day with some Bromely's Estate Tea in the Pusser's Mug once the Weimaraner's had their evening constitutional. Great smoke picked up full VA flavor with hints I'd not tasted and a nice dry smoke to ash.
