Some people are magnificent at their craft/art/profession but totally suck at business and/or customer service. One skillset has nothing to do with the other.

Shutterbug, this is only true until your craft becomes your business. At which point they have everything to do with each other.

Edward, you weren't kidding. That is a ridiculous experience and you rightly posted about it. If I were you, I would contact my credit card company and file a dispute at the very least. If you wanted to push it, he did perform a bait and switch (albeit badly), on you.

Jay, hugely frustrating, sir. As I said though, I'm genuinely glad that others haven't (yet?) been duped in this way.
John, I appreciate your kind words. I fear that the seller is unlikely to offer resolution at this stage but he may still surprise us all.
Code, it's highly noble of you to say so. I know how it may have looked before, and I do understand where you were coming from. Thank you for empathising with me. I have been considering doing precisely what you suggest; 1coyote was forced to go the same path with an online sale, as you may have read above. For me, it'd be a victory if it shakes the seller awake, so that no one else need go through similar hassle.
I will report back with any progress. Thank you all for taking the time to write.

This is not the first story of this kind that I have heard about communications issues with Moonshine Pipes resulting in frustrated customers, long waits before resolution to customer service related issues, and general dissatisfaction with how issues are resolved. I've not yet heard a complaint about the quality of the pipes received, but significant frustration about the buying process and customer service complaint resolution.

Good morning, Pat.
Thank you for sharing this information. In which case, it seems this isn't just a one-off. I thought maybe my incident was a hiccup that has festered, making it difficult to resolve on Jonathan's end... However, clearly this is just a bad habit.

I hoped more than anything that these behaviours were not deliberate but any mistake made with continuity is simple negligence. I would be curious to see if anyone comes forward to tell us the specifics of their experience.

Thanks again for sharing this, Pat!

I am glad I did not, to tell you the truth. Not that it was not good advice, but commenting on that picture prompted a response from Jonathan himself.
Jonathan says that the damage I perceived is part of the rustication. I can perhaps see where he is coming from, based on the photographs. It is, however, worse in person. I am willing to accept this as a difference in perspective. He offered me the possibility of sending it back but this is the only one I will be able to get from that series, so I don't necessarily want to do that. I have had feedback on the picture which is all I wanted. So I am happy about that.
He explained that he is very, very busy- which makes sense. He explained that the extra pipes were not included in my original order because he ran out, I am guessing without realising before making me that promise. Clearly, more orders came through than anticipated when he offered them for free with orders. This is fair enough, of course.
He sent out a collective email stating this but I was not included in the mailing list notifying customers that he'd run out, for which he apologised. He also agreed that in my position, he would also have been annoyed at the lack of response. He offered to refund the entirety of my order, which I declined. I explained that I am still a fan of his pipes and still respect his work.
Jonathan has offered to send me a pipe when he has more in stock. I said this would be wonderful if he wants to, but not necessary as far as I am concerned. An apology and explanation was more than enough for me.
It's unfortunate that things turned out the way that they did but I want to stress the following:

Do not let this influence whether or not you buy from Moonshine Pipes.
As you can see from others, the majority of orders are problem free. I was unlucky and think I was well within my rights to be disappointed in the way this panned out but a bit of admittance from Jonathan has gone a long way towards remedying that.
Moonshine Pipes is in a state of reorganisation which will hopefully prevent issues like this in the future. Mistakes happen, we all know how it is to let things get a little bit beyond our control. It takes a lot to admit that we made mistakes. Jonathan seems a genuine person and I firmly believe that there were no ill intentions on his part.
All I wanted was an apology and I now have that. I am happy with the explanations offered and I consider this issue resolved. Thank you all so much for contributing to this thread. I will be smoking my Moonshine Shiner this evening.

Me thinks the OP is on a vendetta and building post count. What others' experiences have been is a point of curiosity with the OP. Why? I have no idea. The thread has established the vendor's customer service seems to run the gamut from good to bad.
Taking the problem to the credit card company is singularly good advise. Particularly since we are only getting one side of the story. Hope it gets resolved through the card company as it appears Jonathan has washed his hands of the transaction.
"He's still posting on Instagram." So? What does it matter with regard to your OP. Just deprive him of your moneys through your credit card provider!

I've been waiting nearly two years for a pipe from Jonathan on a trade deal. Still waiting..
You're not the only one, OP. My advice: Move on with the wisdom you have gleaned.

Thank you, 1coyote! I suppose time will tell. I am not expecting anything, I was happy for the apology and the explanation. Anything else is a bonus at this stage.
Dan, Wow... That is frustrating to say the least. 2 years is really something. Sadly that somewhat defies the possibility of a logical explanation. I'm really sorry to hear that.

This thread is the most nuanced and finely tuned example of passive aggression I think I've ever seen in my life.

I'm no shrink, but I thought when somebody actually comes out with their complaint, it's not passive-aggressive anymore. ???

Haha, subtle and nuanced passive aggression... What can I say? Being British isn't a requirement but it certainly helps.
Though on this occasion I can't take credit for that. As Aldecaker says, I feel I was rather transparent in my complaints.

I think most of the issue was taken with the first post. Have a problem, explain problem, ask for advice.
It was presented in an unorthodox way by fishing for other people's thoughts first, which is what I initially found unappealing. I got over it ;)
