Mold/rust in a tin of Chenet's Cake

Today I wanted to open a tin of 2017 Chenet's Cake, and this is what I got...

The tin was stored in a plastic container in a cool, dry place. I'm very sad (it's the first time this has happened to me)...I have many other tins of C&D products, let's hope there aren't any nasty surprises in the future.

Wow. At a loss of words for that one. I think a little shocking for this one is that blend is part of their cellar series - and they actively encourage cellaring for years for an estimated peak on it.

I didn't take a picture of the tobacco (it was too disgusting to me)...anyway, the top block was covered in green mold with orange streaks...and there was some rust on the outside of the bottom of the tin, and external mold between the top of the tin and the plastic lid. The most disconcerting thing is that the tin was stored in a completely dry place!

I opened all my C&D tins and jarred them for this reason. Only one had mold (thank goodness)! I check the jars at least once quarterly and all good so far.

Mold doesn’t enter the tin from outside, so it’s not your fault. They’ll make it right.

Yeah. I thought about that after I made my post. I had an issue with some Steamworks in 2023 and they hooked me up but it was a new tin. How do they make up for 8 years of aging?
Surely they can’t.
One of the risks of cellaring I suppose.

Yeah, can’t get the age back, but at least they don’t just tell the customer to pound sand and they don’t argue about it.

If you’re cellaring tobacco sooner or later you’ll find mold, or a tin of mummy dust. Fortunately it really isn’t common.
