Last night, while cleaning some pipes and organizing(I'm in the process of moving out of my basement into a shop, all conditioned spaces) I decided it was time to pop a new old tin as I had one pint jar remaining from my recent Bulk jarring session. That's when I like to try something new.
So I had this old(to me) tin I bought at a B&M, tinned in 19. I popped it, slight hiss, good smell. Then I saw this.
I don't really want to name maker or blend as these issues have been beaten to death in other threads.
I put it back in the tin and didn't smoke it but before I toss it, I wanted to run it by the forum.
In my experience, limited though it may be, good crystals are very fine and sparkly. While this is white, it was duller. Looked like only certain layers in the plug.

Needless to say I was disappointed. I have 2-4 more tins of this blend in my cellar and it gets great reviews so I am paranoid about the rest. I don't want to lose it all but I don't want to open them all and break the aging cycle.

Does this mean some blends look like this and are ok and others are not?


It smelled like tobacco, no other really overtones. I tried not to handle it too much once I got it open to reduce spore spreading in my new tobacco space!

This is going to be a shocker, but being in the winemaking and tobacco growing gig, all tobacco has the spores and yeast on it from the fields. Actually, all living things, even us, are covered with the tiny things that will eat us up when we hit the ground dead. The thing tobacco companies try to do is inhibit these tiny little nasties, by changing the PH or adding inhibitors.

When I make wine, I have to kill the wild yeast before adding the strains of yeast that I want, because wild yeast is unpredictable, and the yeast bred for a particular wine will give me the tastes that I prefer. Some weirdos like this wild yeast and the vinegar notes that they get from this shity wine, ha ha. But, cabbages are fermented this way into kraut and kimchi, and cucumbers can be fermented directly into pickles without using vinegar like little old ladies do to cut corners. All of this works because we are covered in the buggers that are just waiting for us to die. Otherwise, dead plants and dead animals would just lay in the fields for eons.

No, I know what you mean and am aware just trying to be cautious.

As always, it's probably mold. But who cares? If you want to, you can smoke it. It might be a bit hypocritical to worry about mold cancer when smoking a pipe at the same time.

Dadgum, I just don't want to get sick for a couple of weeks as that would cause me to not smoke or smoke less, and while that may be healthier in the long run, it would kinda ruin my hobby times. Moldy tobacco may be the safest....

Sick for a couple of weeks, or chronic COPD-like symptoms for the rest of your life. I wouldn't suggest anyone smoke mold... but, hell, I would never take anyone's health advise on a smoking forum anyway, ha ha.

It does make me reeeeeeally want to pop a tin of this stuff I was aging to enjoy it fresh vs not at all. I suppose this one could have had some fluctuation in storage over the years on the shelf due to power outages or renovations etc.

Mold forms fast. Chances are this had mold on it before it even hit the shelves. Conditions it was stored it couldn't have affected the possibility of mold very much at all.
