Hi folks new guy here.
I usually smoke english blends but want to try a burley that is heavy on the molasses taste.
Any suggestions? Thanks.

The current (STG) version has a more pronounced molasses taste than its Pinkerton version. Less nutty, earthy or harsh for a 100 percent burley. — Mind you, sweet for a burley.

For my tastes Wessex Brigade Campaign Dark Flake is tops. It is still available in the U.S but is a bitch to find and most everyone has a 2 tin limit. When I loaded up in 2012 there were no limits and I was buying the blend in 25 tin lots. I didn't stop buying till I had around 215-225 tins of it.

My other favorite is Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky. That was discontinued somewhere in the 2010-2012 range and I had not bought any for my cellar as it was always available. Well one day I see it has been discontinued in the U.S and I was pissed at myself for letting it get away.

Then in June 2016 it came back on the U..S market so I got a test tin, smoked a few bowls and then ordered 100 tins for a measly 701.00. These were the 50 gram variety as they no longer made the tall boys with 100 grams of tobacco. I also got lucky with some 1998 tall boys and 2005 tall boys and bought them up quick. I am aging the 50 gram tins and I will check them in June 2022 at their 6 year mark.

The pricks at Orlik again decided to pull the DSK from the American market again. People just didn't understand what DSK would taste like with a decade or more of age. The molasses is in your face on the fresh stuff but smooths out and becomes something you are not prepared for after a proper aging has been done. I like to think that I have decent taste buds for flake tobacco and DSK is a favorite.

Esoterica Stonehaven (though, in its treacle form)
Granger (less than the above)

The Sutliff Ready-Rubbed that I purchased was high in cocoa but light in molasses.

You also might try a Danish mixture, something from MacBaren like golden extra or Scottish Mixture, or Flying Dutchman Match by Sutliff.

I didnt get much from Sutliff RR Match.

I agree with Chasing Embers, Sutliff RR Match is a molasses bomb. Try dedicating a pipe to it, smoke only that in it, and the molasses flavor will build.

Stokkebye Sweet Vanilla also has a molasses flavor to me, as does Captain Black White, but Sutliff RR Match is THE Molasses Bomb.

You could try flavoring your own with some blackstrap? I've never tried that.

Tobaccoreviews.com has an advanced search field. Here is molasses:

Can't think of any brown sugar. Maybe the Sutliff Match for the old Sugar Barrel?

Granger does an artful job of flavoring with molasses, though I think you could smoke it for years without being aware of it. It brings up the flavor of the burley nicely and lends a quiet sweetness to the leaf, but doesn't taste like you're having molasses on your pancakes. Ref. brown sugar, there is a superb Virginia blend from one of the Lakeland houses that is called Brown Sugar Flake, but it doesn't have that flavor at all. It's just a rich sweet Virginia blend. I'd put it right up there with McC's Dark Star for Virginia blends. I'm not sure Brown Sugar Flake is imported to the U.S. A member sent me a tin some years ago.

When smoking a molasses cased tobacco, I don't get as much the flavor as I get the "effect". Like I know how it smooths out tobacco, provides a certain sweetness and mouthfeel, but for me, it doesn't taste the same as eating molasses. With liquorice it's the same.

Angler's Dream and the discontinued Brown Sugar Flake are the only two I can think of.

I would say that many blends have sugar in them, white or brown. However, differentiating them from other kinds of sweeteners like corn syrup or honey is well beyond my tastebuds.

Actually, one that tasted a lot like brown sugar to me was C&D Derringer.
